Glenwood/Glenelg/Dayton: Demand continues to grow for Food Pantry help

It seems hard to believe, but it was just over a year ago when the Food Pantry, in the Glenelg United Methodist Church, opened for business.

The pantry is open the third Saturday of each month, 9-10 a.m., and provides assistance to those in need of groceries, toiletries or household products. The Food Pantry is a partnership between the church and the Howard County Food Bank, with food donations coming from both places.

When the pantry first opened in October 2011, only three families came that day seeking assistance. These days, demand for the pantry continues to grow and it now serves up to 19 families each month.

With the number of families served each month, the shelves go from full to almost bare each month, but the generosity of many local donors helps to keep the shelves stocked.

As shared in a previous column, Nick Crabill was the notable donor for September, who organized a food drive during a Glenelg High School football came, issuing the challenge to fill his pick-up with food before the night was out.

In addition, in October, the Food Pantry received a large donation of food from the Weight Watchers Lose for Good Team, in the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center in Ellicott City, as well as a large donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Clarksville.

Although the pantry can always use any type of food or toiletry items, they would like to especially ask donors to consider focusing on donations of fruit as we begin to enter the holiday season. Renee A. Foose invites parents and the community to join her for a Listen and Learn Forum. The superintendent will share school system priorities and answer questions. The input gathered at the forums will help shape the development of a strategic plan for the school system.

A session will be offered on Oct. 29 in the River Hill High School Cafeteria from 7 to 8:15 p.m. If you are planning to attend, it is requested that you register in advance at http://www.hcpss.org to ensure available space. Questions may be submitted upon registration or during the forum.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood invites the community to enjoy a Community Feast on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. This month's meal will be Italian and is lovingly donated by Smokin' Hot Catering located in the Inwood Shopping Center. Dine in or carry out meals are available. The cost is $9 per person or $30 max per family. The proceeds from the October Feast will go toward a not-for-profit organization right in our community — Worldwide Shelters.

The Glenwood 50+ Center is currently hosting a Silent Auction Fundraiser, that will remain open until Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. The community is invited to stop by, get an auction bid number, and browse the many auction items, bidding often.

Many of the items offered for auction would make great holiday presents. Every dollar raised will benefit the Glenwood 50+ Center, helping to support programs, speakers and activites. For more information about the silent auction, call the front desk at (410) 313-5440.

Do you have a teen or tween looking for a fun Saturday afternoon activity? The Gary J. Arthur Community Center will be hosting Rock the Mic on Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. Youths between the ages of 11 and 17 are invited to perform original comedy, a song, poetry or magic, or just sit back listen and watch. Refreshments will be available.

Participants will receive a code for a digital audio download of their performance, courtesy of Towson's Masters of Music. Registration is not required for this event.
