You never know where you might meet neighbors. I once met a Dayton couple in Central Florida. Those Dayton people get around.
Randy and Margaret Walton were running errands recently in Frederick. They stopped for a quick lunch at Bald D's Barbecue. It was great. They wanted to give the owner a thumbs up. He came over and they started talking.
Soon they discovered that the owner is Dave Carter, formerly of Dayton. His family is still here. Dave also does catering. You can find him at http://www.baldbbq.com.
The restaurant is at 11339 Liberty Road in Frederick. If you're in Frederick, stop in and check it out.
Looking for an interesting vegetarian meal close to home? Great Sage will be donating 10 percent of sales to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals on Aug. 26.
School will be back in session starting Aug. 27. Drive carefully and stay alert for children near traffic.
Back to school time often means more free time for adults to make a difference in the community. NeighborRide, a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to helping Howard County seniors maintain independence, is looking for you.
The group offers transportation for medical appointments, activities, shopping and other personal needs. Colleen Dumais Konstanzer tells me there are currently nine volunteer drivers in Clarksville and seven active passengers.
Lately, they have been averaging 1,100 to 1,200 trips per month and demand is continuing to grow. When volunteers drive, seniors thrive. It's a wonderful service and extremely flexible.
Younger children are welcome to come along for the ride and greatly enjoyed on these multi-generational outings. You may choose a schedule convenient to your home or office. Volunteers are especially needed between bus pick-up and drop-off times.
