Happy New Year everyone! New Years is a time to make a few resolutions. What are yours? Mine is to make sure I inform you of events happening in our area so you can keep your resolution.
Why not sign up for Saturday Night at the Movies at the North Laurel Community Center. The next movie is "Kung Fu Panda" on Jan. 19 starting at 6 p.m. The cost is $2 for members and $4 nonmembers. Kids under 5 are free.
The ticket includes popcorn, a drink and the movie. To register, call 410-313-0390.
Maybe you are resolving to get more involved in the community. Why not resolve to join your child's PTA or Boosters? Schools need our support and by supporting the school you are supporting your child.
Why not join the North Laurel Civic Association? There is so much happening in this area, why not come out and make your voice heard? The next meeting will be Jan. 17.
One thing they will be discussing is the new proposal for a shelter for the chronically homeless in our area. The county wants to buy Beech Crest Mobile Home Park, near the California Inn, and use that land.
These are people that have not been successful at transitioning back into the public. The bill is called Community Enhancement Floating District and the bill number is CB35-2012.
The county had a meeting for the community on Jan. 3, but did not pick a time that could be advertised to the community. The vote on funding the bill is Jan. 7. To find out more, search cc.howardcountymd.gov/Displayprimary.aspx?ID=4294968832.
Then if you would like to make your voice heard, contact your Councilwoman, Jen Terrasa, at 410-313-2001.
Maybe your resolution is about getting in shape. I suggest once again looking at what they offer at the North Laurel Community Center. Find the right exercise class for you and sign up today. Go to http://www.howardcountymd.gov/NLCC.htm. The center also offers programs for residents of all ages, including cooking classes and crafting programs. There is something for everyone to enjoy. A great resolution is self improvement.
If your resolution is about helping your child succeed in school, I have the programs for you. The Howard County Library System is offering free online tutoring.
Just go to http://www.hclibrary.org/homework_help and you can chat with tutors. The libaries will also have a guide with research tools for students K-12.
Is your child a Reservoir student? He or she can get free in-person tutoring with the Gator Academy. The January sessions are on Jan. 13 and 27 at the Community Center, 2 to 4 p.m. Permission slips can be obtained at http://www.rhsgators.com.
I will be away for my daughter's wedding so I will miss a column or two but I will be back by the end of January. Happy New Years!Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
