North Laurel/Savage: Savage library offers teens an after-school media lab

It's a very busy time of year so check out everything that's going on.

Do you have a teen at home who wants to spend lots of time on the computer, but you are not there to supervise it. Well, teens are invited to hang out at the Savage Branch Library Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from now to Nov. 28 in the HiTech, their science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) digital media lab.

They can create music, videos, e-books and play games with friends from 3 to 6 p.m. There will also be special classes when school is closed, so check out their site at hclibrary.org/hitech_events or call 410-880-5980.

The Gator Academy, a free tutoring program for any Reservoir High School student, will hold its next session Oct. 28, at the North Laurel Community Center. The program will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Email YvonaWard@verizon.net or phone Miriam Cruz, at 240-640-7885, for more information.

The county is hosting workshops for the North Laurel and Savage areas to find out your vision for area development. The meetings will be held Oct. 25, at the North Laurel Community Center; and Oct. 30, at the Carroll Baldwin Hall. The United Methodist Church of Savage will be holding its annual Fall Festival on Nov. 10, noon to 5 p.m. Come out for the soups, sandwiches, baked goods, crafts and used book sale. The church is at 9050 Baltimore St., in Savage.

The Horizon Councils and the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County are presenting a family communication workshop called Mean Girls to help girls, age 11 to 14, and their parents confront negative behavior with a positive outcome.

Deborah West, a clinical social worker and life coach, will conduct the workshop. It will be held at the Savage Branch Library, on Nov. 1, 6:30 to 8 p.m. You must register by calling 410-880-5975.

Laurel Park is back to live racing — and with it some fun events for the entire community. On Saturday, Oct. 20, they will be holding a social media event called Digital Reins. On Oct. 26, it will be Track of Terror and Oct. 27, will be the Fall Festival of Racing and Oktoberfest.

The North Laurel Community Center has a lot of fall activities for all ages.
