Ellicott City: Manor Woods Elementary twins have numerically odd birthday this year

Parents Karen and Joe Buron have been looking forward to the 11th birthday of their twins, Zach and Emma, "since the day they were born."

On the surface, it may seem ordinary to have twins turning 11 years. What makes the birthday of these fifth-grade students at Manor Woods Elementary School special is they will celebrate their 11th birthday Nov. 11 — 11/11/11.

While the twins haven't finalized their birthday party plans yet, mom Karen told me it will be a small party with close friends with of course a "11" theme. The big celebration will be later this fall, when the family takes a trip to Florida where Zach and Emma were born before moving to Ellicott City. Their visit to Orlando will include a swim with the dolphins and a trip to Miami to see Zach's favorite team, the Miami Dolphins, play in an NFL game.

Happy 11th Birthday Zach and Emma! Enjoy your celebrations.

Did you know Maryland's most famous swimmer, Michael Phelps, was diagnosed with AD/HD at age 9? His mother, Debbie Phelps, has written a book, "A Mother for All Seasons," that offers tips to parents and educations on how to help students with AD/HD and learning challenges to become academically and socially independent.

Debbie will be in town tonight, Thursday, Nov. 3, to headline the fifth annual AD/HD Awareness Event in Ellicott City from 7 to 9 p.m. at Howard High School. Phelps will give her personal accounts with AD/HD as both a mother of a child with AD/HD and as the principal of Baltimore County's Windsor Mill Middle School.

The public is invited to this free event where Phelps book will be available for purchase and signing. The event is co-sponsored by the Howard County Public School System, CHADD of Greater Baltimore, the Learning Disability Association of America, Howard County Chapter and Individual Differences in Learning. For more information, contact Emily Hurd at emily_hurd@HCPSS.org or call 410-313-1252.

Kudos to the Howard High School varsity, junior varsity and freshman volleyball teams for raising almost $1,000 recently to support breast cancer research by hosting a "Dig Pink — Volley for the Cure" fundraiser that included T-shirt and baked goods sales. The Lady Lions would like to give a special shout out to Howard High junior Kristen Flint who organized the event and to major supporters Athletics and Activitives Mananger Michael Duffy, coach Katie Collins and Kupcakes & Company.

Emory United Methodist Church invites the community to its annual family friendly election day luncheon and bazaar Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Carolyn Deverin told me the menu will include chicken salad or ham, scalloped potatoes, apple slices, slaw, green beans, corn ball, and dessert.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12 and free for kids younger than 5.Too busy to eat in? There is a carryout option for $10 per person. If you can't attend, but would like to support the church, tickets to the event can be purchased and donated to those less fortunate.

For more information or to place a carry out order call 410-465-6162. The church is handicapped accessible.

The Viking Backers Booster Club is hosting their annual Longaberger, Vera Bradley Basket and Bingo Night Nov. 18 at 6 pm (bingo starts at 7 p.m.) at The Lodge, in Catonsville. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

The Northfield Elementary School PTA has a great opportunity for all home-based business owners such as Pampered Chef, Cabi, Creative Memories and Mary Kay. They are inviting business owners to showcase their products at a "Jingle Bell Boutique" during its holiday Kids-Make-A-Craft Fair Nov. 12th.
