Ellioctt City residents Cecily Cummings Wood and her husband Ralph Wood are early music lovers and regularly attend performances in and around theWashington, D.C., area.

Ralph told me about one of the largest east coast gatherings of early music aficionados — the biennial Washington Early Music Festival. It begins this weekend Saturday, June 2, and runs through June 30 in Washington.

The 2012 festival theme is "Vices and Virtues: Passionate Music of Early Europe" and will feature a variety of affordable musical shows, workshops, demonstrations, hands on instruments and lectures celebrating early music from the medieval to the baroque (1100-1750).

If you attend the festival, look for Cecily's artwork on the festival program. including the cover design. You'll know it's Cecily's art if you find "cecwood" — her artist signature — in the bottom right-hand corner of the program.

After retiring from a career in information management, Cecily resumed her love of drawing and painting that reflect her passion for history, travel, museums, theater, concerts and literature.

She has studied under numerous important artists, including her current teacher, renowned Howard County artist Alice Webb.

Cecily's watercolor, stained glass and photography work can be found in homes across the United States. For more information about Cecily and her art, go to her website at http://www.cecwood.com.

The Banner's Hallmark store in Long Gate shopping center got a visit last week from the sister team of Polly Thatch and Susan Newcott, the authors and the illustrator of the new children's book "Olive's Balloon Adventure."

This was the authors first official booking signing event. The book's main character, a young girl named Olive, is an independent-minded, free spirit who accidentally finds herself afloat in a hot air ballon and travels around the world before she realizes she needs the help of others to help her return home.
