Howard routs Blake to win own girls basketball tournament

Howard defended its home court with a 43-28 victory over Blake to win its own holiday tournament on Friday night.

Junior center Syndey Biniak scored a game-high 16 points to pace the Lions. Anne Kinsey and Jayda Gilmore combined for 15 more for Howard, which took a 17-point lead into the half. 

The Lions, who improved to 8-1 overall on the season, advanced to the finals after downing Liberty, 55-27, on Thursday.

The Scorpions may have fallen in their holiday tournament championship game on Friday evening, but coach Scott Willingham felt that his team "probably played the best game of the season."

Sophomore Tori Diggs finished with a game-high 15 points and Traonna Thomas added 12 more.

Rachel Lazris scored a team-high 12 points, while Alyssa Bialek and Grayson Corbett each added 10 for the Wildecats in the finals of the Roberts Oxygen Holiday Classic.

Lazris averaged 11 points per game over two days and was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Vikings rebounded from a 23-point loss on Thursday with a victory over C.M. Wright just 24 hours later.

Sophomore Nia Crump - who was named to the Lady Millers' All-Tournament team - netted a game-high 23 points, including eight in the final quarter. Meghan Doherty and Megan Konig each added nine points.

Vicki Rowe had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), Meg Sterling scored 14 points and Jenna Collins added 11 points and 17 boards for the Hawks in the IAABO third place game.

River Hill trailed by three points at the half before outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 19-8, in the third quarter to take a 40-32 lead into the fourth. In the end, Gwynn Park rallied late to edge the Hawks.
