The Orioles are trying to welcome another Ripken into the family nest. Cal Ripken, Sr. was a long-time coach and even a manager with the Orioles. Of course Cal Ripken, Jr. had a Hall of Fame career in Baltimore. On Wednesday, the O's select a third generation of Ripken, Cal Jr's son Ryan, in the Major League Baseball draft.

Ryan is a high school senior at Gilman School in Baltimore. He is a 6-foot-6 first baseman and pitcher and the Birds drafted him in the 20th round with the 612th overall selection. His college choice is South Carolina, the two-time defending NCAA Champions.

He batted .377 with 25 RBIs in his senior season at Gilman. He also went 4-1 on the mound with a 2.30 ERA. The Orioles expect him to go to college but said it was worth using a pick on him in case he chooses to go pro instead. Ripken is 18 years old and will not be eligible to be drafted again until after his junior year if he decides to attend South Carolina.
