Harford triathletes earned a half-dozen victories in the annual North East Triathlon Sunday in Cecil County.
Shawn Loper of Bel Air placed seventh among the men, and Jennifer Meis, also of Bel Air, was seventh among the women in the International Distance race, which included a 1500-meter swim, 23.2-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run.
Meis led the women's 30-34 age group, winning by 4 1/2 minutes in 2 hours, 41 minutes. Loper finished first in the men's 30-34 age group in 2:10:54. He ran the third fastest running split among the 163 competitors, 37:22.
Bob Brown finished 22 minutes ahead of second place in the men's 55-59 age group, placing 31st overall in 2:37:08. Joel Weszka was 19th in 2:28:01 and fifth in men's 20-24.
Others placing among the top four were Ryan Stiltner, fourth in 25-29 in 2:34:31; Kim Webster, second in 25-29 in 2:42:27; Mike Kemen, third in Clydesdale division in 2:46:46; and Lauren Greenberg, fourth in 25-29 in 2:47:36.
Scott Wheeler and Justin Markel won their age groups In the sprint-distance race - a 750-meter swim, 15.6-mile bike and 3.1-mile run.
Wheeler placed fourth overall among 200 finishers, closing with a 20:21 on the run to cross the finish line at North East Community Park in 1:22:43. Markel finished 11th in 1:27:11 to lead the 20-24 age group by 2 1/2 minutes.
Others in the top 20 were Daun Sigafoose, third in 50-54 in 1:27:58; Brian Walker, second in 45-49 in 1:28:30; and Guy Danna, fourth in 50-54 in 1:28:42.
Lauren Bradley led the in the Athena category in 1:46:53. Six others from Harford placed among the top four in age groups: Robbie Reeves, second in 45-49 in 1:42:49; Jennifer Jones, fourth in 35-39 in 1:43:16; Tara Buecker, third in 25-29 in 1:43:38; Jose Delp, third in 55-59 in 1:49:08; Mary Johnson, fourth in 55-59 in 2:07:00; and Terri Broemm, second in 60-64 in 2:19:35.
River Valley Ranch Trail Run
Lyndsay Ames of Churchville finished fourth among the women in the River Valley Ranch Trail Run Saturday in Manchester. The 22-year-old from Churchville raced 646 other runners over a 10K trail course, finishing in 52:10 to win the women's 20-29 age group.
Also in the 10K, George Weber of Abingdon won the 50-59 men's competition in 49:26, and Kendall Sinosky, the 16-19 competition in 56:52. Robbie Reeves of Street placed third in women's 40-49 in 56:29, and Katie Wirth of Abingdon was third in 30-39 in 55:42. Ronald Keith of Bel Air placed fourth in 50-59 in 51:37.
A second race, a 5K, drew 473 runners. Judith Lavoie of Havre de Grace led the women's 40-49 age group in the 5K in 24:25. Daphne Karas, 13, of Darlington, finished second in under-16 in 23:39.
BRRC summer track meet
Dan Colopietro won the 800, and Nick Fransham, the 1500, in the third BRRC track meet of the summer Aug. 8 at Goucher College.
Colopietro ran 2:10.8 in leading a 1-2-3-4 Harford finish. Windsor Jones, 2:17.6; Fransham, 2:18.6; and Ian Fiser, 2:22.0, finished behind Colopietro.
Fransham won the 1500 in 4:29.9 with Fiser fourth in 4:48.9. Ellen Shephard, 5:59.4, and Paige Rickey, 6:18.8, were fourth and fifth in the women's 1500.
In races elsewhere
Derek Alban and Dave Knaide of Bel Air won the BRRC Two-Person 10-mile Relay July 28 at Loch Raven High School. Running five alternating 1-mile legs each, they clocked 56:55 to finish 1:16 ahead of the runner-up team of David and Chris Vitek.
Noah Hutton finished 24th among 2,000 runners in the Rotary Twilight 8K in Rockville July 21. Hutton, 20, of White Hall, was timed in 26:17.
Eliza Herman of Darlington placed third among women 30-39 in the Sneaks Come Out at Night 15K in Baltimore Aug. 11. She ran 1:24:13. Kim Roberts of Bel Air was 69th among the 340 finishers in 1:22:27.
Marge Rosasco of Joppa finished eighth among the 182 women in the Giddy Up 5K in Towson Sunday in 24:58. She took first in the over-60 category. Nina Smeltzer of Bel Air was second in the 50-59 age group in 28:06. In the men's race, Ken Szymanski of Bel Air was 27th among 113 finishers in 23:56 and Mike Trott of Joppa was 34th in 24:54.
Hannah Van Scyoc, 13, of Jarrettsville, placed third in the 10-13 age group in the Highway One Group 5K at Dewey Beach, Del., Aug. 11. She was timed in 25:58.
Rob Bartholomew of Aberdeen placed fifth among 40- to 49-year-olds in the very challenging Half-Wit Half Marathon in Reading, Pa., Sunday. He completed the 13.1-mile course in 2:03:30. Other Harford runners among the 373 finishers were Robert Stevenson, 2:07:50; Scott Starkey, 2:08:14; John Heller, 2:10:40; Allen McMillin, 2:18:18; Bob Gross, 2:44:49; Seth McElroy, 3:00:32; and Megan Stevenson, 4:04:14
