Gridiron guru goes 6-1 in week four after one bad pick

Let me just say, I'm sorry, Hawks. Last week I picked the North Harford boys, who were thumped, 44-14, in week three by St. Paul's to lose last Friday's home game with Friendly. Well, the Hawks pasted their guests, 42-0, and in so doing kept me from my first perfect record of the season. All my other picks were right on, but I got that one so wrong it's embarrassing. Anyway, my record is 13-2 for the last two weeks, so things are turning around, and I can feel a week of flawless picks knocking on my door. Here's what we have coming up on Friday night in week-five football action:

North East at Perryville. The Panthers did not turn in their best effort last week, when they got past the Patterson Mill Huskies, 23-14, and the North East boys have proven they aren't pushovers (their main problem is a lack of depth, which hurts them late in games when they need fresh legs), so this one might not be a total blowout. The pick: Panthers win, 28-14.

Aberdeen at North Harford. I'm hoping this one is a real slug fest, with both squads pouring on 30-plus points. The way North Harford's offense was running last week, the Eagles will need to be moving from the opening kick if they don't want to get run over. The pick: North Harford wins, 37-32.

Fallston at Havre de Grace. The Warriors are still searching for that first victory, while Fallston, which has been cashing in heavily on the legs of running back Marc Badger, has yet to lose. This might not be pretty. The pick: Fallston wins, 34-12.

Joppatowne at Bel Air. Bel Air is probably still feeling the sting from a two-point loss to Fallston last week, and the Mariners are certainly not content after getting whitewashed by Aberdeen. The pick: Bel Air wins, 21-13.

Overlea at C. Milton Wright. It sounds like this one is pretty evenly matched, but I'll give the edge to the Mustangs, who are protecting a perfect 4-0 record. The pick: CMW wins, 24-22.

Patterson Mill at Bo Manor: This might be an interesting one, as I'm sure the Huskies are just dying to pick up their second win after three straight defeats. The pick: Patterson Mill wins, 28-12.

Edgewood at Harford Tech. I think the Rams have this won. The pick: Edgewood wins, 28-10.

Last week's record, 6-1.

Shad's all-time record, 1767-696, 71.7 percent.
