Harford's Greatest Athletes: Ear Christy
Perryman's Earl Christy is the only Harford County native to earn a Super Bowl ring as a player with the 1968-69 New York Jets, for whom he was a cornerback and kick return specialist for three seasons. What's remarkable about Christy is he never played a down high school football because Harford's two segregated "consolidated" schools for black children did not offer the sport. That didn't stop Christy from earning the nickname "All World" at Havre de Grace Consolidated, where he excelled in track and field (high jump, shot put) and basketball. At Maryland State College (now UMES) Christy was a four-year letterman on football teams that included future NFL players Emerson Boozer (his Jets teammate) and Art Shell. He was inducted into the UMES Hall of Fame in 1984.
