Harford runners compete all over the area

About 50 Harford runners convened in Maryland's Capital City Saturday to race in the second annual Annapolis Half Marathon.

Adam Bosley led the Harford contingent. The 23-year-old Bel Air resident finished fifth overall, just two places out of the money, in 1:22:59.

Last year, this race was short on distance - by about a quarter mile - and short on organization. This year, the field was smaller by 750 but still drew 2,700 runners.

Finishing among the top 100 men were Brian Lupus, 1:33:43, and Chris Gaeng, 1:33:56. Fastest among Harford women were Barbara Ann McGrain, 1:45:32, and Diana Lupus, 1:46:26.

Several other Harford runners finished under 1:55: Brian Messick, 1:43:59. Barbara Ann McGrain, 1:45:32; Rob McGrain, 1:46:01; Diana Lupus, 1:46:26; Kim Kellagher, 1:47:03; Valerie Elliott, 1:47:03; Jerry Marquez, 1:49:37; Jacob O'Neal 1:52:20; Sean Ely, 1:53:27; Leslie Hawes, 1:53:37; Christian Baltimore, 1:53:41; Steve Mazza, 1:54:18; Nolan Crane, 1:54:39; and Kelly Blackburn, 1:54:42.

Richmond Marathon: Hennessey, 3:05:35

Rob Hennessey and John Escarsega, both of Bel Air, registered top-20 age-group finishes in the Richmond Marathon Nov. 10.

Hennessey finished 18th in the men's 35-39 age group in 3:05:35. Escarsega was eighth in 50-54 in 3:09:01.

Also among the 4,740 marathoners were Lisa Gesualdo, 4:01:42; Chi-Chin Wu, 4:05:05; Jane Frank, 4:08:09; Chinyere Eze-Nliam, 4:44:18; Nancy Shipley, 4:45:14; Chete Eze-Nliam, 5:05:25; Julie Larkin, 5:42:57; and Patricia Knapp, 5;58:10.

Donna Lewis placed second among women 55-59 in the half marathon. She was timed at 1:43:31.

Running With the Reindeer draws 340

Runners from Wilmington led the way in the Running With the Reindeer 5K in Havre de Grace Sunday.

Matthew Cutrona repeated as the men's winner, leading a field of 340 through the River City in 17:20. Radley Reist of Catonsville, 17:35; Mike Wright of Ridley Park, Pa., 18:08; and Joe Heid of Churchville, 18:36, took the next three places.

Sarah Rusk of Wilmington won the women's race in 18:57. She led runner-up Courtney Waldhauser of Fallston by 3:09 at the finish. Wendy Kinnamon of Kirkwood, Pa., was third in 22:27; and Kara Zimmerman of Elkton, fourth in 22:38.

Collegiate track and field: A Deller Double

Amanda Deller began her senior indoor track and field season Saturday in the same way she opened her first three seasons at UMBC - with a victory. This time, she won two events, the shot put and weight throw, in the Bison Opener at Bucknell University. 

Deller, a six-time America East Conference champion from Aberdeen won the weight throw with a toss of 50 feet, 6 inches then took first in shot put at 44-10 3/4. 

In the same meet, Ben Pickett of Bel Air, a UMBC freshman, placed fourth in the 3,000 meters. The John Carroll grad ran 9:16.36.

In the Navy Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Saturday, Bowie State's Dana Smothers (Harford Tech) ran 49.95 in his first 400-meter race of the season, placing 10th. Wes Redfearn of Morgan State placed 16th in the 400. The Joppatowne grad ran 50.72.

Driver leads John Carroll

Rebecca Driver won the 55 hurdles and placed second in the high jump to lead John Carroll to third place among 14 teams at the first IAAM meet of the indoor season at CCB Essex Saturday. She ran 10.36 seconds in the hurdles and cleared 4-feet-4 in the high jump.

Kristen Kohles contributed a second-place finish in the 1600, running 5:35.12. Amanda Spaeth placed sixth in 5:47.83. Hannah Jacques took fourth in the shot put at 26-7 and Nicky Clauter was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 10.86.

In other races

Jeff Burger and Debbie Felts were winners in the annual RASAC Charity 5K in Bel Air Sunday. Burger ran 18:08 to finish 9 seconds ahead of runner-up Charles Powell II. Kevin Hennessey ran 19:30 in third and Duane Christy, 20:29 in fourth. Felts led the women in 23:20, finishing 4 minutes ahead of runner-up Allison Woodring.

Thomas Flynn of Havre de Grace was the runner-up in the over-60 category of the Jingle Bell Run 5K in Ellicott City Saturday. He clocked 27:04 to place 80th among 368 men; 1,200 runners competed.

Christine Trzcinski led the women and Charles Powell II, the men in the RASAC Cedar Lane Stroll Nov. 12. Trzcinski finished the 5-mile course in 36:59. Powell won the men's race in 31:14.

Rhonda Utz of Forest Hill ran 1:57:38 in the Atlantic City Half Marathon Oct. 21. Tanya Peel of Pylesville was also among the finishers, running 2:00:29.

David Stevenson and Jennifer Perkovich led the way in the RASAC Winters Run 5 Miler Nov. 25 in Bel Air. Stevenson led the men in 32:59, finishing 26 seconds ahead of Rob Bartholomew. Perkovich ran 40:41 for first among the women. Chi-Chin Wu was second in 42:14.

Track, field coaches sought

Two Harford schools are seeking coaches for the 2013 high school track and field season. Harford Tech needs a coach for the throwing events; Darrell Diamond, 410-688-2396, is the point of contact.
