Cara Wettlaufer won the women's 5K race of the Baltimore Running Festival Oct. 15. The 28-year-old C. Milton Wright alumna led a field of 1,929 women to the finish line in 19:14, winning by 6 seconds. She was one of only two repeat winners of the festival, which drew a record 25,000 entries.
Jesse Jaeger of Kingsville finished third in the men's 5K race, clocking 16:19 behind winner Tristam Thomas (15:34). Bob Becker of White Hall won the men's 60-64 age group in 20:23.
The largest of the four races of the festival was the CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield Half Marathon, with 9,166 finishers. There were 440 runners from Harford County in the 13.1-mile event, with 10 of them earning top-10 finishes in their age groups.
Jerry Henderson of Bel Air placed second in 45-49 in 1:25:18. Third-place awards went to John Escarsega of Bel Air in 50-54 in 1:31:05; Esther Buchser of Abingdon in 60-64 in 2:07:39; and Marjean Apland of Bel Air in 65-69 in 2:11:52.
Brian Lindsey of Bel Air placed fourth in age 14-19 in 1:29:48, and his former Patterson Mill teammate Dan Evans was fifth, close behind him in 1:32:09. Lydia Johnson of Street took fourth in 55-59 in 1:50:27.
Finishing eighth in their respective age groups were Chris Disney of Bel Air in 20-24 in 1:30:49; Joe Richardson of Forest Hill in 50-54 in 1:37:19; Jennifer Bouffard of Fallston in 40-44 in 1:40:15; and Shannon Lynch of Jarrettsville in 14-19 in 1:50:36.
In the 26.2-mile race, the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon, Charles Powell II of Abingdon finished 46th among 3,212 finishers in 2:58:23. He sped through the halfway mark in 1:24:57 en route to his sixth-place age group finish. More than 100 runners in the marathon were from Harford County.
Megan McNew, a former North Harford standout, ran a personal best of 3:10:38 and placed 14th among the women and sixth in the 30-34 age group.
David Stevenson of Abingdon ran 3:11:20 for ninth in 35-39. Zach Huffman of Abingdon placed 10th in 45-49 in 3:19:26. Ann Collins of Edgewood placed 10th in 35-39 in 3:46:30. Zach Zander of Havre de Grace ran 3:23:21; Maurizio Illiano of Fallston, 3:34:49; and Matthew Burdette of Churchville, 3:35:56.
In the marathon relay, Marge Rosasco of Joppa ran with former Olympic marathoner Bill Rodgers, Eleanor Simonsick and John Roemer to place 41st among 952 teams in 3:20:24. Rosasco, 63, averaged 8:09 per mile for 7.3 miles.
In other road races...
Alex Loper of Bel Air finished second in 17:38 in the Dustin Bauer Memorial 5K Sunday at Oregon Ridge, 8 seconds behind winner Rory Jenkins.
Shana Hersh of Havre de Grace led the women in the Monster Dash 5K at the Arena Club in Bel Air Sunday. Mark Kitz of Brick, N.J., led all 89 finishers in 16:14.
Jerry Henderson of Bel Air paced a field of 37 runners Saturday in the St. Ursula 5K in Parkville, running 16:18.
Christy Hoppe of Havre de Grace placed third in her age group in the Vermont 50 Miler Sept. 25. She ran 9:26:57. Ginn White, 8:55:10, and Gary Reilly, 10:46, were also among the 256 finishers.
Jay Tobin of Fallston won the 65-69 age group in the Osprey Sprint Triathlon Oct. 1 in Public Landing. He clocked 1:31:12 for a half-mile swim, 15.2-mile bike and 5K run. George Stewart of Bel Air was second, 18 minutes behind him. Anna Wallis of Fallston placed second in 20-24 in 1:33:37. Chuck Wienckowski of Bel Air was third in 60-64 in 1:33:07.
