Megan Ravenscraft completed the toughest challenge of her running career Sunday in the rarified air of Leadville, Colo.
The 25-year-old C. Milton Wright alumna crossed the finish line of the 31st Annual Leadville 100 Miler at mid-morning after a 29-hour-and-47-minute trek over a mountainous route.
Known as The Race Across the Sky, the run began at 4 a.m. Saturday in Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the U.S. Runners from 44 states and 15 countries competed over the out-and-back course with 18,000 feet of ascent, reaching the highest point of 12,500 feet twice near the ghost town of Winfield.
Of the 850 starters, 499 finished within the 30-hour limit. Ravenscraft placed 483rd in this, her first attempt at a 100-miler. She finished about 9 hours behind Colorado resident Ashley Arnold, the women's winner.
The grueling run presented a double challenge for Ravenscraft. The day after she finished it, she began her first teaching job in the town of Carbondale, 100 miles from Leadville.
Win, record, award for Rosasco
