Two young sprinters from Aberdeen's Soaring Eagles Track Club captured bronze medals in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the National AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans.

Mylique McGriff finished third in the age-12 boys 100. Christina Riggins took third in the age-12 girls 100.

They were the top performers among 20 Harford County athletes who competed with 12,000 other young athletes in eight days of track and field competition.

McGriff, of Havre de Grace, was timed in 12.18 seconds in the 100. He also placed fifth in the long jump at 16 feet, 9 inches and sixth in the 200 in 25.28.

Riggins, who was selected for the Hershey North American finals the same week, but decided to compete in New Orleans instead, ran 12.97 seconds in the 100. She also placed fifth in high jump at 4-8.

Mark Pickett of the Harford County Track Club finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run for 14-year-old boys. He ran 9:52.83. Earlier in the meet, he placed 18th in the 1500 in 4:42.88 and 38th in the 800 in 2:13.20.

Katherine Eckart, also of the Harford club, returned to the track after her eighth-place finish in the 3,000 to take 15th in the 1500 meters in 5:26.57 and 20th in the 800 in 2:31.91 for 12-year-olds.

Top 25 finishes went to Jessica Rogers, 11, of Bel Air, who was 22nd in the 800 in 2:38.05. Raymond King, of Edgewood, was 14th in the 15-16 long jump at 21-1 1/2 and 27th in the triple jump at 41-7 3/4. Nia Alleyne, of Aberdeen, was 21st in the 17-18 triple jump at 36-5 1/2.

Among other Harford performances: Kiersten Bond, of Aberdeen, was 33rd in the 17-18 long jump at 17-3 1/2 and 51st in the triple jump at 33-7 3/4; Nicholas Brown, of Belcamp, 97-11 in the 17-18 discus and 32-8 in the shot put; Isaiah Everett, 12.93 in the age-13 100; Niles Alleyne, 12-5 in the age-9 long jump for 22nd place, and the 13-14 Harford Track Club team of Chris Jones, Mark Pickett, Jonathan Sayihe and Matt Chin, 3:53.78 in the 4x400.

Cherry Hill 5 Miler

Thirty-two runners in the RASAC Cherry Hill 5 Miler in Street Sunday endured the three H's of running misery: hills, heat and humidity. David Stevenson and Mike Monaghan led the way over the course, said to be the hilliest in Harford County.

Stevenson won in 33:34, edging Monaghan by 13 seconds. Rob Stevenson took third in 35:44; Duane Christy, fourth in 37:48; and Rob Bartholomew, fifth in 38:02.

Lydia Johnson, director of the race, was also the women's winner. She ran 45:13 to finish 35 seconds ahead of runner-up, Robbie Reeves. Tanya Peel was third in 46:08; Maryann Grafton, fourth in 48:44; and Karen Henry, fifth in 49:16.

In Races Elsewhere...

Shana Hersh, of Havre de Grace, opened a lead on the run to win the 40-44 age group in the Philadelphia Women's SheRox Triathlon Aug. 7. She swam 0.6K in 14:19, biked 25K at 21.6 mph and ran 5K in 22:08 to finish 1 minute ahead of the runner-up in 1:22:45. She was third overall in the field of 930.

Mike McMonagle, of Bel Air, finished 25th in the Burning River 100-mile Endurance Run in Cleveland, Ohio, July 30-31. The 20-year-old Naval Academy Midshipman completed the race, designated as the USATF 100-Mile Trail National Championship, in 22:30:52. It was his first ultra marathon since placing fourth in a 50K two months earlier.

Mary Rye, of Abingdon, placed eighth in her age group in the Riley's Rumble Half Marathon Aug. 7 in Germantown. She clocked 2:18:41 for the 13.1 miles.

David Whitehead, of Forest Hill, and Charlie Hogan, of Belcamp, were among the 121 finishers in the Catoctin Trail 50K in Frederick July 30. Whitehead placed 34th in 7:23:25 and Hogan was 84th in 8:33:30.

Max Anderson, 14, of Bel Air, placed 22nd in a field of 360 in a 5K in Dewey Beach, Del., Aug. 7. He ran 20:18 and took fourth in his age group. Nina Smeltzer, of Bel Air, finished third in the women's 50-54 age group in 26:29.
