Harford County runners turned to smaller races in the last week of May.

Alex Loper and Michele Hoffman led a pack of 42 runners in the RASAC Mariner Point 5.4-mile race in Joppatowne Sunday. Loper took a wrong turn but corrected his course and finished 2 minutes ahead of the field in 32:54. Hoffman stayed on course to lead the women in 41:42.

Rob Stevenson finished second in 34:42 and John Heller, third in 36:34. Lydia Johnson, 43:36, and Wu Chi-Chin, 45:29, were second and third among the women.

In Fallston Sunday, 62 runners followed Brett Schrader of Abingdon across the finish line in the annual Grandview Christian 5K. Schrader, 30, was timed in 20:14 in finishing 16 seconds ahead of race director Joe Dragunas, who was second. John Jagde took third in 20:37, and Matthew Creacraft, fourth in 20:47.

Jeanette Halliburton of Abingdon finished first among the women. Halliburton, a member of the Wilmington University cross country team, clocked 20:32 for third place overall. Christine Trzcinski, 21:18; Nelly Budrow, 21:22; and Laurie Abildso, 22:30, took the next three places.

In Perryville on May 19, Mike Dabravalskas led a field of 67 in the Head of the Bay 5K sponsored by the Good Shepherd School. Dabravalskas finished in 17:34 with a sizable lead over Chris Farmer, 19:47, and Joshua Padilla, 19:56. Amanda An won the women's race in 20:16 with Julia Bacso second in 20:55,and Nancy Hill third in 21:59.

Kevin Gebhardt, who set the Harford County record in the 1600 meters (4:18.5) at Fallston High School 30 years ago, finished 35th in 27:40.

St. Michael's Half Marathon

Esther Buchser of Abingdon led the 60-69 age group in the St. Michael's Half Marathon May 19 on the Eastern Shore. The 63-year-old teacher from Abingdon completed the 13.09-mile course in 2:05:47.

Jeff Burger of Bel Air ran 1:23:51 to place sixth among the 419 finishers and second in the 30-39 age group. Also from Bel Air, Dan Fleming, 17, ran 1:44:13 for third in his age group, and Niki Burger, 1:55:09 for sixth in 30-39.

Meghan Dryden of Abingdon won the women's race of the Stoneleigh Stampede in Baltimore Saturday, covering a 5K course in 20:46. Brian Hairfield of Abingdon finished seventh among the 200 finishers in 19:18.

Megan McNew won the women's race of the McVet 10K in Baltimore Sunday in 38:04, finishing almost 2 minutes ahead of runner-up Megan DiGregorio. Scott Kothenbeutel of Bel Air observed his 50th birthday by finishing third in the men's 50-54 age group in 45:31.

Shana Hersh of Havre de Grace placed third among the women in the Cascade Lake Triathlon May 12 in Hampstead. She completed a 0.31-mile swim, 15-mile bike and 3.1-mile run in 1:25:33 to win the 40-44 age group by 10 minutes. J. Tobin of Fallston won the men's 65-69 age group by 6 minutes in 1:46:33.

Karly Pascuzzi of Havre de Grace led the 30-34 age group in 23:38 in a 5K at Dewey Beach, Del., May 28. She was 12th among the women in the field of 439 finishers.

David Stevenson of Abingdon placed second in 35-39 in the Masser 5 Mile in Lewes, Del., Sunday in 32:19.

Duane Christy finished third in 40-49 in the Race for a Better Delaware 5K in Wilmington in 21:11 Sunday.
