Kara Tolson's performances in the recent Capital Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships showed remarkable similarities to those of a year ago.
The Salisbury University junior from Abingdon presented near-carbon-copy performances in Fairfax, Va., Feb. 17 when she won two dashes and anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory.
Tolson, a Patterson Mill grad, won the 60-meter dash in 7.96 seconds, breaking the school record of 8.01 she set in the meet a year ago. She next won the 200 in 26.19, bettering the CAC record she set in last year's meet. Then she anchored the relay to victory in 4:09.32, missing by 1.02 second, the school record she helped set in winning last year.
She also competed in the high jump, clearing 4-11 3/4, exactly the same height as last year but placing third instead of second.
One aspect wasn't the same. Tolson's feats didn't carry the Salisbury women to the team title as they did last year. The Seagulls won the men's title but finished second behind the University of Mary Washington in the women's scoring.
Brooke Schulz of Bel Air ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay, which Tolson anchored. Schulz, a C.M. Wright grad, also placed fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the 60 hurdles.
Elsewhere in collegiate track, Evan Campbell of Fallston placed second in the high jump at the George Mason Last Chance Meet Feb. 24 in Fairfax. The Towson University junior cleared 5-3 and ran on the Tigers' 4x400 relay team that placed third in 4:00.07.
Also for Towson, Elizabeth Tauber (John Carroll) placed third in the 3,000 meters in 10:20.81, and Wilhelmina Austin (Edgewood) placed tenth in the long jump at 16-5.
In the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Edinboro, N.J., Feb. 23, Kiersten Bond of Aberdeen finished sixth in the long jump. The West Chester University freshman jumped 17-6 3/4.
Nia Alleyene, of Aberdeen, was named to the All-Rookie Team following the Northeast Conference meet. A freshman at Fairleigh Dickinson, she jumped 36 feet, 3/4 inch for sixth place in the triple jump.
