Noah Hutton raced to a personal record in the mile run Saturday, his second PR since he first donned a UMBC uniform two weeks earlier.
The North Harford alumnus clocked 4:20.0 in the Patriot Games, an indoor meet on George Mason University's 200-meter track in Fairfax, Va. He placed seventh in the race, his first collegiate mile, bettering his previous best of 4:20.26 for 1600 meters, which he recorded in the 2010 state high school meet. He attended Philadelphia University and Harford Community College before transferring to UMBC.
Two weeks earlier, Hutton ran an 8:43.42 in placing 12th in the 3,000-meter run in the Gotham Cup meet in New York City, his best mark for the distance. In the Patriot Games, he also anchored UMBC's distance medley relay to third place, with John Carroll grad Ben Pickett running the 800-meter leg of the relay.
Elsewhere in track and field, Amanda Deller of Aberdeen set a new personal best in placing second in the shot put at the Penn State National Invitational Saturday. The UMBC senior threw 49 feet, 2 1/2 inches, the best mark in the America East Conference this season.
Also in the Penn State meet, Chris Swisko of Aberdeen ran 4:15.25 in the mile. The Mount St. Mary's senior placed eighth. Bowie State's Dana Smothers (Harford Tech) ran 49.88 seconds in the 400 meters, placing 11th.
In the Thomson Invitational at the University of Delaware Saturday, Evan Campbell of Fallston placed third in the women's high jump. The Towson University junior cleared 5 feet, 5 inches. She also ran on the Tigers' 4x400 relay team, which placed second in 4:06.73.
Also for Towson, Hannah McKenzie (C. Milton Wright) finished sixth in the 5,000 meters in 19:20.27, Shemika Martin (Aberdeen) ran 1:05.56 in the 400; Wilhelmina Austin (Edgewood), 16-0 1/4 long jump; and Kaitlin McCabe (CMW), 6:08.12 in the mile.
Kara Tolson (Patterson Mill) and Brooke Schulz (CMW) ran on Salisbury University's 4x400 relay team, which finished in 4:21.82.
In road racing
Sarah Zephir-Thomason won her third race of the RASAC Snowflake Series Sunday, leading the women in the Fox 5K in Bel Air in 20:55. Christine Trzcinski finished second in 21:17 and Nelly Budrow, third in 22:13. Luis Navarro, 18:10; Joel Brusewitz, 18:24; and Mike Feinberg, 19:55, were the top three men among the 57 finishers.
Matthew Burdette of Churchville ran 3:24:39 in the ING Miami Marathon Sunday. Also among the 3,784 marathon finishers were Jim Cole of Whiteford, 3:44:47, and Alyssa Dugent, 19, of Fallston, 4:58:22.
David Callahan of Havre de Grace placed fourth in the 50-59 age group in the Super Bowl 5K in Wilmington on Jan 19. He ran 22:01, placing 30th among 336 finishers.
Duane Christy of Havre de Grace ran 1:11:08 in the Icicle 10 Mile in Wilmington Jan. 13. He placed 67th in the field of 590 and was eighth in the 45-49 age group.
