In Monday pool play action at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, the Ohio Valley squad from Mattoon, Ill., topped the Harford County team from Forest Hill, while the Southeast team from Jupiter, Fla., picked up its second victory by defeating the Midwest Plains representative from Lamar, Colo.
Playing at Fenway Park Monday afternoon, Mattoon dropped the host Forest Hill team, 9-4.
Mattoon improved to 1-2, while Forest Hill fell to 0-3.
Davis Johnson was Mattoon's top offensive contributor, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Garrette Branson cranked out a solo home run in the victory and scored twice.
Forest Hill's Nicholas Sulzbach was 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run in the loss, while Eric Dondalski, Sean D'Adamo and Dawson Harker each had one RBI.
Brock Moncel earned the win, striking out six, walking two and allowing four earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
Midwest Plains tops Southeast
In Monday's National Division showdown at Cal Sr.'s Yard, Jupiter routed Lamar, 12-2.
With the victory, Jupiter moved to 2-0 in pool play, while the Colorado squad fell to 1-1.
Reese Albert led the way for the winning side, going 1-for-4 with a grand slam. Timothy Kudlinski was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and one run in the victory, while teammate Sean Maletzke was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Andres Guevara and Nicholas Navarette both had one RBI for the Colorado squad, while Max Carere scored twice and drew two walks.
Jupiter pitcher Austin Temple picked up the win, striking out four, walking four and holding Lamar to one earned run on three hits over 2-2/3 innings of work.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
