HCC women lose basketball district final, 66-54

The Harford Community College women's basketball team (25-4) came up short in the 2013 NJCAA District Final Saturday, losing to ASA (24-3), 66-54.

Freshman Capree Garner scored 22 points in the loss.

The Fighting Owls struggled to get into an offensive groove, but showed tenacity throughout the first half. Harford trailed 7-0 and didn't score until more than six minutes into the contest, but used a 21-9 run to take a 21-16 lead. The Fighting Owls would take a 28-25 lead into the break.

ASA came out aggressively and took the lead early and after a few back-and-forths, the Avengers took the lead for good with 13:36 remaining. ASA would grow its lead to as many as 15 in the second half, en route to the title and a trip to the NJCAA National Championship in Kansas.

Tiffany Taylor scored 11 points, Na'Kya Keitt added nine off the bench and Shelby Key chipped in with six.

The Fighting Owls now hope for an at-large bid into the NJCAA National Championship in Salina, Kansas. The tournament begins on March 18.

If Harford does not receive an at-large bid, the most successful season in program history would come to an end with the first conference and region championship in school history, along with a school-record 25 victories.
