Harford county's 2012 boys soccer preview


Head coach: Bill Wardle (ninth year)

2011 record: 8-7

Top returning players: Andrew Frazer, Sr., (Midfield); Madoni Flores, Sr., (Midfield); Justin Howard, Sr., (Forward); Andy Montgomery, Sr., (Defense); Ben Sanderson, Sr., (Defense)

Key newcomers: Tyler Green, Jr., (Midfield); Devin Murray, Jr., (Midfield)

Outlook: The Eagles, who have made it to the 3A North regional semifinals three years running, are in good shape for the 2012 season, as they bring back six starters from the 2011 squad.

"The players are confident that with hard work and a team-first mentality they will have another successful season," Eagles head coach Bill Wardle said.

Bel Air

Head coach: Dominic Rose (13th year)

2011 record: 9-8

Top returning players: Nick Adams, Sr., (Midfield); Nat Hand, Sr., (Forward); Carson Kalama, Sr., (Forward); Martin Palacious, Jr., (Defense); Brandon Tolson, Jr., (Midfield)

Outlook: "We should be competitive in every game this season, and look to improve on last year's record," Bobcats' head coach Dominic Rose said. "I feel all the county teams will be strong this year, though."

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Joe Davis (fourth year)

2011 record: 8-8

Outlook: The reigning Chesapeake Division champs have a tough early schedule in 2012, and they will use it to identify team weaknesses, prepare for the UCBAC divisional race and steel themselves for the regional playoffs.

Outlook: Head coach Ho Chang summed up the 2012 Rams by saying, "this team has the potential to have a great season. There is great cohesion within the team, which is led by senior captain Mike Ryan."


Head coach: Christopher A. Hoover (12th year)

Outlook: "We are looking to continue to tradition of excellence at Fallston High School," head coach Christopher Hoover said. "We have a terrific group of young men on the team, and we are looking to push the pace on our opponents, making each match count. The Cougars have set lofty goals for the season, and have a lot of recent history to live up to."

Harford Christian

Head coach: Bryan Wilson (eighth year)

2011 record: 15-0

Top returning players: Jordan Crank, Jr., (Defense); Paul Franco, So., (Midfield); Tim Guertler, So., (Defense); Seth McCarty, Jr., (Forward); Zack Schieber, Sr., (Defense); John Wilson, Sr., (Forward)

Outlook: "Harford Christian returns its entire 2011 defense that allowed only seven goals in 15 matches last year," head coach Bryan Wilson said. "John Wilson and Seth McCarty return up top, and should offer an effective scoring punch. Our midfield is basically brand new, and is demanding our pre-season attention. We have a very difficult schedule coming off a perfect 15-0 season. It should be a great year."

Harford Tech

Head coach: Andrew Bleichfeld

Havre de Grace

Head coach: Sean Smith (seventh year)

2011 record: 12-7

Top returning players: James Antopolos, Sr., (Goalie); Farhan Bachu, Sr., (Midfield); Brad Davidson, Sr., (Defense); Bobby Smith, Sr., (Forward); Austin Sylvester, Sr., (Midfield)

Outlook: The Warriors, 1A North regional champs in 2011, are coming off one of the best season's in program history, and they didn't lose much from last year's state semifinalist squad, with nine starting players and the team's top three goal scorers making it back onto the roster for the 2012 campaign.

"The team has moved into the [Chesapeake] Division, and will use each game to gauge progress and prepare for the playoffs," Warriors head coach Sean Smith said.

John Carroll

Head coach: Jim Fendryk (third year)

2011 record: 9-11-1

Top returning players: Nektario Athanasiou, So., (Midfield); Caleb Anderson, Sr., (Defense); Jake Brown, Sr., (Goalie); Colby Fell, Jr., (Forward); Camillo Fortunato, Jr., (Midfield); Adam Isenock, Sr.

Outlook: Coming off one of the best, most productive seasons in recent history, which ended with a tight, 1-0 overtime loss to Gilman in the 2011 MIAA playoffs, the Patriots return with plenty of talent, as 12 players with varsity experience and five starters from the 2011 team are back for another try.


Head coach: David Orth

2011 record: 0-11

Top returning players: Kojo Adade, Sr., (Forward); Ravin Jajistar, Sr., (Defense); Dale Marx, So., (Defense); Bailey Sands, So., (Midfield)

Outlook: "This year we have a great group of kids," head coach David Orth said. "They are working hard to improve each practice and the team has a high morale and cohesiveness. This year we should be competitive, but we are very young with only two seniors. Our lack of size and experience means a lot of young players are going to have to step up."

North Harford

Head coach: Matt Johnstone (seventh year)

2011 record: 9-7-2

Top returning players: Brooks Billings, Sr., (Defense); Robert Fiackos, Sr., (Goalie); Randy Foster, Sr., (Midfield); Kyle Six, Sr., (Forward)

Outlook: "We have seven returning starters from a team that lost in the 3A North regional final to Hereford," head coach Matt Johnstone said. "We are excited to have five 10th-grade players on the roster who will all contribute. The players are working extremely hard and meshing well as a team, and the coaches are very excited about this team."

Patterson Mill

Head coach: Wes Rich (fifth year)

2011 record: 10-5

Outlook: "This year's varsity squad looks to continue building upon what the graduating classes before them have started," head coach Wes Rich said. "We have had a great pre-season, and are striving to take our program to new heights this year. Although we graduated 12 seniors, we return 10 who have embraced their new leadership roles and are ready to lead this team. We hope to be competitive each and every week, and continue to grow the Patterson Mill boys soccer program."
