The team-by-team outlook for the 2012-2013 Harford County boys basketball season.
Head coach: Richard Hart (15th season)
2011-12 record: 10-7
Top returning players: Anthony Bennet, Sr. (G); Eric Briggs, Sr. (G); Jordan Burgess, Jr. (G); Alex Funcheon, Sr. (F, C)
Key newcomers: Darryn Garner, Jr. (G)
Outlook: Head coach Richard Hart, the last UCBAC boys basketball coach to capture a state title, hopes his Eagles can rebound from a middling 2011-12 season by employing returning varsity talent and a key off-season acquisition. "We have six seniors on the roster, and three of them had considerable playing time last season," Hart said. "And, we had Darryn Garner transfer to Aberdeen from John Carroll this year. He's a guard, and should fit pretty well on our team."
Head coach: Mike Getz (second season)
2011-12 record: 15-9
Top returning players: Aaron Farley, Sr. (F): Tyler Norcross, Jr. (C); Juwan Singletary, Jr. (G); Derek Spanellis, Sr. (F)
Key newcomers: Nick Adams, Jr. (G); Jake Andrews, Jr. (F); Derek Freels, Jr. (G); Parker Jones, Jr. (G); Tommy Keller, So. (F); Chris Murdock, So. (G); C.J. Simmons, So. (G); Nick Vazquez, Jr. (C)
Outlook: "Replacing the solid inside-outside combination of Dezmon Hall and Cavin Murray will be a challenge, but with program continuity consisting of four returning varsity players who saw significant playing time and experience last season, along with eight junior varsity players moving up, we are looking to build on last year's turnaround season," head coach Mike Getz said. " We look for a December schedule including Perry Hall, top Harford County teams in the Chesapeake Division and the North Carroll Holiday Tournament to prepare us to make a run at the Susquehanna Division title in January and February."
C. Milton Wright
Head coach: Jon Stefanides (second season)
2011-12 record: 12-12
Top returning players: Connor Bays, Jr. (G); Sam Hahner, Sr. (C); Will Hazelton, So. (G); Logan Keys, Sr. (G); Mychal Stefanides, So. (G); Jamal Worthington, So. (G)
Key newcomers: Alex Battaglia, So. (G); Tyler Dameron, Sr. (G); Brendan DeGross, Sr. (C)
Outlook: "Despite returning four starters from last season's team, we will still be one of the youngest teams in the UCBAC, with four sophomores and a freshman," head coach Jon Stefanides said. "The leadership that our seniors are providing will push the youngsters to excel on the court. We will be looking to play hard every night and to get better each day so that we can challenge for the Chesapeake Division.
Head coach: Austin Hill (third season)
2011-12 record: 21-4
Top returning players: Lolami Charles, Jr. (F); Roderick Harrison, Jr. (G); Detrick Matthews, Sr. (G); Fortune Okigweh, So. (F); Lenier Tucker, Sr. (G)
Key newcomers: Danny Crawford, Jr. (G); Jaleel Gibson, So. (G); Aris McGowans, Sr. (G); Kevin Ringgold, Jr. (G)
Outlook: "Between great senior leadership and a host of young and very talented sophomores and juniors, the Rams look to repeat as UCBAC champions this year," head coach Austin Hill said. "The Chesapeake Division appears to be very competitive this year, and the Rams will have a long road ahead of them if we plan on repeating as UCBAC champions."
Head coach: Tim Lacock (second season)
2011-12 record: 6-14
Top returning players: John Makres, Sr. (G); Kyle Tyree, Jr. (F)
Key newcomers: Gus Makres, Jr. (G)
Outlook: "We had a very young team last year, and we took our lumps," head coach Tim Lacock said. "We look to build on that experience with a large group returning from last season. We have a great group of guys that play hard for each other, and are very anxious to improve from last season."
Havre de Grace
Head coach: Brian Eberhardt (second season)
2011-12 record: 5-13
Top returning players: Tyriel Calhoun, Sr. (G); Lavell McCullers, Jr. (F)
Key newcomers: Nick Jones, Jr. (F); Davonte Pittman, Sr. (F, C)
Outlook: "We look to be improved over last year," head coach Brian Eberhardt said. "We have some players that should offer more experience. That, coupled with the addition of some new key players, should make us more competitive."
Head coach: Richard Westerlund (third season)
2011-12 record: 12-11
Top returning players: Nathan Good, Jr. (F); Aurelius Page, Sr. (F); John Wilson, Sr. (G)
Key newcomers: Sean Hughes, So. (G); Ryan Redmond, Jr. (G)
Outlook: "This season proves to be an exciting one for us," head coach Richard Westerlund said. "After losing 80 percent of our scoring, including second-team All-Harford selection Luke Steelman, we had some holes to fill, but the holes are filled and I feel like we have a very strong team this season. We will be contending for the MACSAC conference championship, being led by senior and three-year starting point guard John Wilson. With a mix of some returners and new players, we will have a deep and balanced attack. Our defense will be a staple of our team this year, as we are looking to be locked down defensively. We will continue to look to build the program as we try to become more relevant within Harford County basketball."
Head coach: Bill Jones
2011-12 record: 13-8
Top returning players: Isaiah Gills, Sr. (F); George Hargrove, Sr. (F); Koran Harris, Sr. (F); Tyler Mister, Jr. (G); Dennis Pink, Sr. (G); Zack Valenti, Sr. (F)
Key newcomers: Travis Hash, Jr. (G); Sam Miller, Jr. (G); Hunter Norcross, So. (G); Tahis Senoussi, Jr. (F)
Outlook: "With one returning starter from last year's team, this will be a rebuilding year," head coach Bill Jones said. "We will be led by four-year starter Isaiah Gills. Also, newcomers Sam Miller and Tyler Mister take over at the guard positions. Look for sophomore Hunter Norcross to help with the scoring load that was lost with the departure of four starters."
Head coach: Tony Martin
2011-12 record: 30-8
Top returning players: Rodney Elliott, Sr. (G); C.J. Keyser, So. (F); Jordan Martin, Jr. (G); Marcus Munroe, Sr. (G); Christian Owona, Sr. (F); Lionel Owona, Jr. (F); Mike Owona, Sr. (F); Devin Smaldore, Jr. (G); Jake Wiegand, Sr. (F)
Key newcomers: Rasheed Gillis, Jr. (G); Elijah Long, So. (G); Kimbal Mackenzie, Sr. (G); Trystan Pratapas (G); Michael Tertsea, Fr. (F); Malik Tyne, So. (F)
Outlook: The Patriots will be hard pressed to improve on last season's successes, as they stormed to their second straight MIAA "A" conference crown, and were one of the select few high school teams in the country to collect 30 victories. This year, John Carroll comes back with three starters from the 2011-12 campaign, along with a large group of players new to the varsity level.
Head coach: Jermaine Head (second season)
2011-12 record: 16-6
Top returning players: Keith Alexander, Sr. (G); Khalil Gore, Jr. (G); Jermaine Head Jr., So. (G); Markell Huggins, Sr. (G); Matthew Jones, Sr. (G); Sean Tanner, Sr. (G)
Key newcomers: Gary Blackston, So. (G, F); Rashaad Gore, Fr. (F)
Outlook: "We will be led by our seniors in the back court position, as well as quality newcomers at the guard position," head coach Jermaine Head said. "I look for an improvement from last year's record. With this being my second season here, and having returners that are familiar with our system, it will make for a smoother transition going into the season."
Head coach: Jeff Burrows (fifth season)
2011-12 record: 11-12
Top returning players: Ryan Feiss, Jr. (G); Brock Hurley, Sr. (F, C); Nick Tittle, Sr. (G); Madison Varvaris, Sr. (F)
Key newcomers: Eric Bayer, Sr. (G); Nic Hammer, Jr. (F)
Outlook: "I really like this team," head coach Jeff Burrows said. "So far in the pre-season, we have been playing together and committed. There is not as much, 'me me me,' going on. I expect this team to be better defensively, and with four starters back from last year's team, we should be competitive for the most part. We need to find a team leader and communicate better, but, so far so good."
Head coach: Jeroud Clark (fifth season)
2011-12 record: 23-4
Top returning players: Andrew Bonds, Sr. (G); Malik Bonds, Jr. (G); Mike Reed, Sr. (F)
Key newcomers: N/A
Outlook: "We have a young team, but there are some key seniors that will step into leadership roles," head coach Jeroud Clark said. "It's a new season, and after the huge amount of success over the past few years, this team is looking to continue to play hard."Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
