Trailing, 28-27, after one half of play in Tuesday night's Class 2A East Region Sectional VII boys basketball semifinal, the top-seeded Patterson Mill Huskies surged in the third quarter, outscoring visiting fifth seed Harford Tech, 23-10, on their way to a 64-58 victory over the Cobras. C. Milton Wright, Edgewood and Havre de Grace weren't as successful Tuesday, getting eliminated from the boys basketball playoffs.
"Overall, it was a very tough game, and our boys played extremely hard to overcome the hot shooting in the first half," Huskies' head coach Jeroud Clark said. "We missed some assignments on defense; playing against a good team, that is going to hurt you, and Harford Tech was very good tonight."
The Cobras shooters were on fire during the first two quarters, hitting more than 60 percent of their shots from the floor and draining five three pointers. The Huskies, however, kicked off the third frame with a 10-0 run and were up, 50-38, heading into the fourth quarter. Harford Tech cut its deficit to single digits over the final eight minutes, but Patterson Mill went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to keep the Cobras from tying the contest.
Garett Burkhead led the Huskies with a 17-point effort, while Jay Kuhn helped the winning cause with 12 tallies. J.J. Butler scored 10 points in the victory, while teammate Malik Bonds scored seven. Patterson Mill's Donte Johnson posted six points, while Khalid Smith, Mike Reed and Matt Golczewski all had four points.
Harford Tech's Telvonne Lambert had 15 points and 11 assists in the loss, while teammate Danny Crawford registered 14 points. Isaiah Gills had 11 points and 15 rebounds, while fellow Cobra George Hargrove scored eight points.
This was the closest of the three games the Huskies and Cobras played this season. Patterson Mill won the first, 60-44, on Jan. 13, then topped Harford Tech again, 67-56, on Feb. 10.
With the victory, Patterson Mill will move on to play Elkton, which beat Edgewood Tuesday, in Thursday's sectional final.
The Edgewood Rams, the reigning UCBAC champions, saw the curtains close on their 2011-12 campaign with a 69-64 loss to third-seeded and visiting Elkton in Tuesday's Class 2A East District VII Sectional semifinal matchup.
The second-seeded Rams led, 37-27, at the half.
Van Rolle led the Rams in scoring with a 19-point performance.
C. Milton Wright was knocked out of the post-season Tuesday night with a 77-29 road loss to fourth-seeded Woodlawn squad in the Class 3A North regional quarterfinal round.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs were led in scoring by Will Hazelton, who netted six points. Mychal Stefanides had four points, three rebounds and two assists in the loss, while teammate Conner Bays posted three rebounds, two points and two assists. Jamal Worthington scored four points for CMW, while Logan Keys had three points and a team-high four steals. CMW's Roby Appleby, Henry Cuffie and Jamal Worthington all scratched out four points.
Warriors out, too
Havre de Grace suffered a season-ending loss on Tuesday night, as the fifth-seeded Warriors were defeated, 74-52, in the Class 1A North regional quarterfinals by fourth-seeded host Overlea.
