Pats win low-scoring affair

The John Carroll managed to slug their way out of the McDonogh gym on Monday night with a 39-37 victory over the host-team Eagles.

The visiting Patriots were behind, 23-9, with just over three minutes to go in the half, and were still down by a point, 37-36, with less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Needing one tally to tie the contest, the Patriots ran a play they call the "Maryland," and it worked, as John Carroll's Kimbal Mackenzie got possession of the ball outside the three-point line and knocked down a shot to give his team a two-point cushion.

Now trailing by a pair, the hosts ran one more play, but the John Carroll defense prevented the Eagles from getting a shot off.

John Carroll's Rodney Elliott had a game-high 16 points, and also helped out with three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Mike Owoan had 10 points, two rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots in the victory. Mackenzie had eight tallies, including the game-winning three-pointer, one rebound, one assists and one steal, while teammate Jordan Martin had four assists and three rebounds. Lionel Owona had three rebounds and two assists for the Patriots, while Michael Tertsea had a team-high five rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
