Celebrating the new year "Wrestlepalooza" style, the John Carroll Patriots turned back visiting Loyola Wednesday, beating the Dons, 50-26, in a MIAA A Conference dual meet.
The meet didn't start off all that well for the Patriots, who fell behind 12-0 after two losses by pin at 220 and 285 pounds.
John Carroll pulled even over the next two weight classes as CJ Skokowski and Devin Davis each scored six-point victories. Skokowski built up an 11-0 lead early in the third period of his 106 bout with Marcellus Brown. Skokowski then recorded the pin at the 4:52 mark. Davis won without breaking a sweat, winning a forfeit at 113.

Loyola, however, answered back with three consecutive wins. Defending state champ David Mohler edged Patriot Steven Jernigan 4-2 at 120, while Ben Smist needed 3:46 to put away Artie Milner at 126. Walter Johnson closed the Loyola run with a dominating 17-5 major decision over Christian Scott at 132. Johnson used seven takedowns and three late back points to pile up the points.
Johnson's win gave the Dons a 26-12 lead, but the visitors didn't win another match.
"I thought we could win them all once we got to Strappelli," John Carroll coach Keith Watson said after the meet. He was right.
Strappelli started a seven-match win streak that sent the Patriots to the lopsided win.
Strappelli won a 16-1 tech fall at 138 and the Patriots rolled from there. Chris Almony followed with the day's quickest bout, pinning in 15 seconds at 145. George Weber and Hunter Ritter also pinned in 1:40 and 3:15 at 152 and 160, respectively.
At 170, John Carroll senior Zach Donato and Loyola's Kyle Saunders squared off in the best bout of the match. Donato won 5-4 with a winning takedown in the last five seconds of the match.
The Patriots then put the finishing touches on the win as Rob Stahl (182) and Dan Kleble (195) each recorded second period falls.
The Patriots are 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Huskies earn tri-meet sweep
Patterson Mill improved to 6-1 Tuesday with non-league wins over host Elkton and Perryville. The Huskies came from behind with two late pins to beat Perryville 37-36 on criteria, but they had no trouble in a 72-10 win over Elkton.
Trailing 36-24 with two weight classes to wrestle, the Panthers needed two pins to win the match. At 220 pounds, Eric Eckstein was down 4-1 to Logan Kelly in the second period, then reversed Kelly and got the needed pin.
Connor McLeod followed with a pin over Ryan Figueroa at 285 to force the tie.
Chase Tallon got the Huskies off to a fast start at 106 with a decision, but Perryville won the next four bouts, two by pin, to take an 18-3 lead.
