Harford County wrestling preview

The team-by-team outlook for the 2012-2013 Harford County wrestling season.

Head coach: Kyle Brown (third year)

Top returners: Travis Hubler, Sr., (126); Daniel Velez, Jr., (132); Dylan Morri, So., (106)

Key newcomers: CJ Allen, Fr., (195)

Outlook: "We are looking to have a good season," Eagles coach Kyle Brown said. "We have a veteran presence in the room, coupled with some hard-working newcomers that should lead to a successful season."

Bel Air

Head coach: Craig Reddish (20th year)

Top returners: William Holder-Moore, Sr, (170); John Cross, Jr., (152); Cyler Crawford, Jr., (195); Gavin Rupprecht, Jr., (113); Cameron Watts, So.,(132); Ryan Beveridge, Jr., (138); Anthony Zappaunbulso, Sr., (160)

Key newcomers: David Reagan, So.,(106); Brady Stafford, So., (120); Connor Nash, Sr., (126); Noah Winter, Sr., (145); Justin Noles, Sr., (145); Grant Flemining, Jr., (170); Dakota Crawford, Fr., (285)

Outlook: "We are going to be a much better team at the end of the year than the beginning. We have good depth in the lower to middle weights but are a little thin up top," Bobcats coach Craig Reddish said. "The room has about 50 wrestlers strong working hard every day and I am pleased with the makeup of this squad and think we should be in the hunt with about a half dozen others for the UCBAC title. When the weights settle down we should have a solid dual meet squad with some individuals that should make some noise in the postseason."

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Mike Zacharda

Top returners: Ben Swanson, Sr., (145); Philip Flint, Sr., (160); Doug Their, Jr., (182)

Key newcomers: Alan Dorsey, Jr., (285)

Outlook: "We should be a strong dual meet team," Mustangs coach Mike Zacharda said. "We do have a few guys I can see moving into the regional tournament and even the state tournament." Zacharda also says they have a great core of wrestlers who are highly motivated and very coachable.

Edgewood

Head coach: A.J. Ford (fourth year)

Top returners: Noel Spencer, Sr., (120); Andrew Hout, Jr., (145); Daytron Davis, Sr., (152); Marcus Gash, Jr., (160); Shawn Kluchinsky, Jr., (170); Demetrius Paraschis, Jr., (170); Sam Cantler, So., (195); James Brennan, Jr., (220)

Key newcomers: Breal Madison, Fr., (106); Ethan Jorge, Fr., (126); Josh Game, Jr., (138); David Coates, Fr., (195)

Outlook: "We are at a turning point this year with some very seasoned returners and new upcoming talent," Rams coach A.J. Ford said. "So far what's been displayed in the practice room looks promising, so we're interested to see what happens on the mat throughout the season. This could be a good year for Edgewood."

Fallston

Head coach: Andy Amasia (21st year)

Top returners: CJ Austin, Sr., (160/152); Ridge Myers, Sr., (195/220); Joe Medicus, Sr., (120); Austin Rutkowski, Jr., (182); Garrett Coburn, Sr., (145)

Key newcomers: Colin McDonald, Fr., (106); Eric Baranoski, Fr., (113); Alex Helm, Jr., (285); Nic Minter, Jr., (160/172)

Outlook: The Cougars are returning seven starters from the UCBAC tournament championship team last season. Coach Andy Amasia says there are several talented newcomers, they should have a full lineup and they are looking to be competitive both in duals and tournaments.

Harford Tech

Head coach: Mike Mazza (first year)

Top returners: Nathan Cook, Sr., (170/182); Mike Vega, Sr., (220)

Key newcomers: Andy Schwarz, So., (106); Andrey Kalwa, Fr., (132); Scott Orman, So.; (285)

Outlook: "We have a very young team and our goal is to get better every match individually and as a team," Cobras coach Mike Mazza said. "That is both on and off the mat with a major focus on improving our grades and leadership that will enable each individual to be successful after graduating from Harford Tech. We hope to finish in the top eight in the UCBAC and send as many wrestlers to regions and states as possible. We have an excellent coaching staff with an emphasis on mastering the basics to build a championship team in the coming years."

Havre de Grace

Head coach: Josh Foy (third year)

Top returners: Daniel Peters, Sr.,(145); Josh Nuce, Sr., (138); Nick Scarborough, Sr., (182); Justin Wolbert, Sr., (195); Jacob Nuce, Sr., (152); Ryan Wilson, Sr., (138)

Key newcomers: Jacob Sweigart, Fr., (132); Mike Wheeler, Jr., (160); Shane Andrews, So., (120)

Outlook: "We are very excited for the year and expect to have a strong season," Warriors coach Josh Foy said.

John Carroll

Head coach: Keith Watson

Top returners: CJ Skokowski, So., (106); Zach Dwyer, So., (120); Devin Davis, Sr., (126); Artie Milner, Sr., (126/132); Scott Strappelli, Sr., (132); George Weber, Sr.,(138); Steven Jernigan, So., (145); Christian Almony, So., (152); Christian Scott, So., (160); Hunter Ritter, So., (170); Dan Keble, Sr., (220)

Key newcomers: Austin Smith, Fr (113); Austin Ross, Fr., (145)

Outlook: With the bulk of last year's team returning, healthy and motivated, coach Keith Watson expects to improve on last year's performance. "Our strengths are in the level of experience and depth of the wrestlers in the first 10 weight classes. The weakness would be lack of depth in the upper weights," Watson said. The wrestlers to watch will be Strappelli, as he attempts to win states again (he was first as a freshman); Weber (ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News) attempts to win states for the first time; and returning All Americans Dwyer, Almony and Ritter try to improve on last year's performance.
