A small contingent of high school tennis players from Harford County made the trip to College Park Friday and Saturday for the Maryland State Tennis Tournament at the University of Maryland.
The Fallston girls doubles tandem of Rachael Holehouse and Anna Holehouse turned in the best results, placing third in the bracket. The Cougar pair opened with a straight set 6-3, 6-0 win over Walkersville's Julia Ashe and Andrea Gough. The Holehouses then won 6-0, 6-2 over Mt. Hebron's Sahini Pothireddy and Serene Mathew to reach the semifinals.
In the semis, the locals lost 6-3, 6-2 to Hannah Stahl and Kamilla Beisenova of Whitman, but bounced back to win the consolation match 6-3 and 6-2.
Bel Air's Victoria Quang also reached the semifinal in girls singles, before getting knocked out of the tourney. Quang opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bridgett Blowe of Frederick and then needed three sets to beat Melissa Barall of Wilde Lake in the quarterfinals. The scores were 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1. Quang was then defeated in the semifinals by eventual state champ Megan Hahn of Wootton, 6-0, 6-2.
Michael Quang of Bel Air won his opening match in boys singles, but then fell in the quarterfinals. Quang beat Urbana's Edward Yoon, 6-0, 6-1, but lost in three sets to Leonardtown's Robert Renfrow, 6-4, 3-6 and 1-6.
C. Milton Wright's Bobby Frantz also competed in boys singles, losing his opening match, 6-4, 6-4, to Towson's Jack Chalmers.
In boys doubles, Havre de Grace's Tyler Cook and David Beck picked up a win before losing in the quarterfinals. The Warriors opened with a three set win over J.M. Bennett's Teddy Dunning and Chris LeCompte. The scores were 1-6, 6-3 and 7-5. The loss, 6-2, 6-1, in straight sets, came against River Hill's James Zhan and Oliver Zhao.
The county also had a mixed doubles team from CMW, Becca Piazza and Corey Blanton, who fell in the opening round. The Mustang pair lost 6-3, 6-4 to North Hagerstown's Mollie Johnson and Max Ober.
