Bigger was the word for the annual Harford Memorial Hospital Celebration Run 5K Saturday: bigger field of runners, bigger victory margin in the men's race, and a bigger navigation error in the women's race.
Coinciding with the centennial celebration of the hospital, the race drew 175 runners to the starting line in Havre de Grace.
Michael Daigeaun, of Philadelphia, turned the men's race into a cakewalk, finishing a half-mile ahead of second place in 15:57. It wasn't quite a course record, but Daigeaun, 32, developed a huge gap between himself and the field.
Running in the gap was Megan McNew, who held a sizable lead among the women. Alone in the gap, she missed a turn and ran off course. When she returned to the course, she finished beside her father, Lonnie McNew, in 27:45, well off her personal best of 18:01.
Sandy Sanders, of Havre de Grace, moved into first after McNew's error and won the women's race in 20:26. Julie Bacso, of Bel Air, finished third in 21:00. Others in the women's top 10 were Katie Wirth, 21:50; Julia Stupi, 22:03; Nancy Hill, 22:16; Karen Kenney, 22:23; Laurie Wilson, 22:43; Rhonda Utz, 22:52; Rachel Muzzelo, 23:19; and Miranda Beale, 23:38.
Duane Christy, who won the race last year, ran 19:15 to take second place, 14 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Kirk Ingold.
Others in the top 10 were Benjamin Muzzelo, 20:12; George Weber, 20:36; Zachary Rumke, 20:44; Connor Bowman, 20:48; Anthony Burton, 21:00; Dan Driscoll, 21:31; and Hunter Kothenbeutel, 21:56.
Bethany Beach triathlon
Rob Walker, of Bel Air, finished second in the under-20 age group of the Bethany Beach (Del.) Triathlon Sunday. Walker, 19, finished 21st overall in a field of 390. He completed a 1K swim, 30K bike course, and 7K run in 1:45:58.
A dozen other Harford triathletes were among the finishers: Guy Danna was fifth in 50-54 in 1:55:26. Robbie Reeves took third in women's 45-59 in 2:01:59; Rebecca Richardson was second in 55-59 in 2:15:35; and Wendy Tobias placed fourth in the Athena Division in 2:30:46.

Kyle Vaughn finished second in 30-34 in the duathlon (1K beach run in place of the swim) in 1:59:33. Ian Mize took third in 20-24 in 1:58:55, and Jeanne Hart was fourth in 50-54 in 2:10:48. Angie Mize, 2:15:15, was also among the 165 finishers.

The Towson University sophomore from John Carroll finished 7 10ths behind Megan Kinsella, of Mount St. Mary's, over a 5K course. Both were timed in 19:00.
Two other Harford runners finished in the top 10. Megan Schott, a Mount St. Mary's soph and North Harford grad, was fourth in 19:13. Hannah McKenzie, a C.M. Wright grad and Towson senior, placed eighth in 19:38. Towson won the women's meet with 32 points, beating runner-up Mount St. Mary's by 11.
Ben Pickett (John Carroll) was the number 5 runner for UMBC in the men's race. He placed 20th in 28:52. Dana Smothers (Harford Tech) was the number 2 runner for Bowie State in 32:06.
