Girls basketball: 2011-12 preview

Head coach: Stacey Liles (third year)

Outlook: A preview report from Coach Liles was not received by press time. The Eagles, led by junior center Brionna Jones, has a solid supporting cast, making the Eagles a real threat in the league and at the state level.

Bel Air

Head coach: Calvin Skelton (eighth year)

Top returning players: Caela Tindilia, Sr., (G); Kim Harrell, Sr., (F); Jasmine Mutunga, Sr., (G); Connor Hanley, Jr., (F); Brooke Lorber, Jr., (G)

Key newcomers: Kate Chizmar, Jr., (C); Jamie Bittner, So., (G); Rianna Brooks, So., (C)

Outlook: "Expect the Lady Bobcats to play hard-nosed defense, led by our seniors and experienced junior class," coach Skelton said.

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Marvin Evans (first year)

Top returning players: Jessica Canami, Sr., (PG); Abby Smucker, Jr., (SG); Heather Mckee, Jr., (C)

Key newcomers: Bridget Neff, Jr., (PF); Megan Aro, So., (SG)

Outlook: "This year as a team we are looking to play an aggressive style defense, while still being able to maintain patience and discipline on the offense end," first year coach Evans said. "The girls are working hard everyday in practice to get better and I am confident that they will see the results of their hard work throughout the season."

Head coach: Amber Croshaw (fourth year)

Top returning players: Erica Johnson, Sr., (G); Alicia Grant, Sr., (G); Shanai Beadles, So., (G)

Key newcomers: Jada Hatcher, So., (SF); Shania Stamper, So., (G); Tatiyana Stamper, Fr., (G); Breanna Hanna, Fr., (F/C); Shanai Beadles, So., (G)

Outlook: Coach Croshaw says the Rams have a lot of changes this season. Few returners and a whole bunch of young talented underclassmen highlight the Edgewood roster. "We plan to be a strong competitor in our division this season, especially as the new players continue to develop their skills," said Croshaw.

Head coach: Michael McTeague (fourth year)

Top returning players: Rachael Holehouse, Sr., (G); Alyssa March, Sr., (F)

Key newcomers: Devin Brady, Sr., (G); Emily Nosek, Sr., (G); Jayme Harmon, Jr., (F)

Outlook: Returning just two starters from last season, the Cougars will need some girls to step up and fill the voids. Fallston lost two starters to graduation and one to a soccer injury. "To be successful we will have to work very hard and become fundamentally sound," McTeague said. The Cougars return Holehouse, one of the best guards in the county, and forward March to lead the way. Both girls are four-year varsity players. The Cougars will need good leadership from these two seniors and will need the other returners to take on a much larger role. "If we continue to develop and improve we hope to be very competitive in the UCBAC," McTeague said.

Harford Christian

Head coach: Brian Akers (19th year)

Top returning players: Cady Farrish, Sr., (C); Emily Dodson, Sr., (G); Morgan Landreth, Sr., (F): Amber Guertler, Sr., (F); Sara Karschner, Sr., (G); Leah Edwards, Jr., (G); Chloe Akers, So., (G); Kelsey Williams, So, (G)

Top newcomers: Gracie Shanahan, So., (G); Kolleen Watkins, Jr., (C); Royal Chukwudumebi, Jr., (F); Amanda Good, So., (F); Shannon Pilcher, Jr., (F)

Outlook: HCS lost two players to graduation, but return eight strong players form last year. Leading the way is last year's leading scorer and rebounder Farrish. Dodson led the team in steals last year and Akers led the team in 3-point shooting. "We look forward to an excellent season with great team unity and hard work. The team can keep improving to be one of our best teams in over a decade," coach Akers said. Akers (288-181) is closing in on career win 300. Cheri Kragl is assisting for a 10th year.

Harford Tech

Head coach: Steve Tanribilir (fifth year)

Outlook: A preview report was not received for the Cobras by press time.

Havre de Grace

Head coach: LaTonya Leonard (first year)

Top returning players: Katie Bubb, Sr., (C); Jade McDonnell, Sr., (G)

Key newcomers: NA

Outlook: Leonard, who has been a varsity assistant the past four years, is looking forward to the upcoming season.

John Carroll

Head coach: Mike Blizzard (third year)

Top returning players: Miranda Ripken, Sr., (F); Maria Edwards, Sr., (PG); Emily Soller, Sr., (C); Yemaya Johnson, So., (G); MacKenzie Reese, Jr., (G)

Key newcomers: Rita Watson, So., (C); Ashley Hunter, Fr., (C); Ola Ekundayo, Fr., (G)

Outlook: The Patriots went 19-8 last season and lost in the IAAM Conference Championship by just three points. John Carroll hopes to build on that momentum and win their first girls basketball title since 1984. Experience, speed, and an ability to play inside and outside will hopefully be the keys to success in 2012. The Patriots return eight players from last season and hope a brutal December schedule will get them ready for the February stretch run in the IAAM.

Head coach: Michael Harris (10th year)

Top returning players: Shakara Head, Sr., (PF); Lakiah Huff, Sr., (SF); Cierra Tourville, Sr., (C); Tejah Patton-Hill, Sr., (SG); Ashley Joyner, Sr., (SF); Crysten Wells, Sr., (PG); Deona Jones, Sr., (SF); TroiQuay Malloy, Sr., (PG)

Key newcomers: Nicole Myers, Sr., (PG); Cydni Hurley, Sr., (PG); Kija Kennedy, Jr., (PF); Anniemae "Rose" Macklin, Jr., (SG); Felicia Okoye, Jr., (C)

Outlook: The Mariners have a handful of strong returning players, but also have a lot of new pieces, according to Harris. "We will have to work very hard to coach up a talented, yet very green bench," Harris said.

North Harford

Head coach: Lin James (43rd year)

Top returning players: Sarah Heaps, Sr., (G)

Key newcomers: Alexis Lyttle, Fr., (F)

Outlook: Led by Heaps, the Hawks return seven seniors and have starters back in four of five positions. Coach James says depth of the team and overall experience will help the team this year. Walt Bogarty is assisting this season.

Patterson Mill

Head coach: Joyce Jenkins (second year)

Top returning players: Morgan Golec, Jr., (F)

Key newcomers: Sam Herman, Fr., (PG); Qalea Ismail, Fr., (SF)

Outlook: "We are hoping that the new additions that we have with the freshmen will give us the balance we need in all of our positions", coach Jenkins said.
