Cross country teams from John Carroll and C. Milton Wright emerged from the pack in the third weekend of the racing season.

The Patriots won the girls' team title and finished second in the boys' race in the Knights Invitational last Friday in Severn. CMW took second place in both the boys' and girls' B Class races in the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.

In winning the Knights meet, John Carroll put four girls in the top 10 for a low score of 40 points. Kristen Kohles finished third in 21:26; Amanda Spaeth, fourth in 21:42; Holly Driver, seventh in 22:29; and Alex Gromacki, 10th in 22:47. Ellie Marindin was the fifth finisher at 16th place in 23:54.

Dave Knaide led the John Carroll boys with a third-place finish in 17:58. Will Horn placed 12th in 19:07; Zane van Pelt, 14th in 19:11; Will Hopkins, 21st in 19:36; and Cole Alban, 26th in 19:55. The Patriots scored 76 points, finishing second behind Annapolis (49 points), despite the absence of Derek Alban, who has been idled by an injury.

In Williamsburg, senior Matt Hoerr led the CMW boys with an eighth-place finish in a field of 229 runners in 17:31. Dan Fleming placed 14th in 17:50; Brad Ensor, 17th in 17:57; Mike Capozzoli, 44th in 18:40; and Sam Lewis, 71st in 19:13, to score 149 points behind Patrick Henry High of Roanoke, Va., with 83 points.

In the girls' race, two CMW runners finished in the top 10: Taylor Walker at ninth, 21:32, and Abby Fleming, 10th, 21:35. Kelley O'Neill was 18th in 22:10; Miriam Silton, 23rd in 22:35; and Becca Palmer, 28th in 22:49, for a score of 74 points, 20 behind Herndon, Va.

Fallston competed in the A Class races at Williamsburg. Sam Burgess ran 18:31 to lead the Cougars to 31st place. Noah Kudla ran 19:07; Dan Lekites, 19:28; Hunter Ryan, 19:38; and Jacob O'Neill 20:12.

Brooke Lekites led the Fallston girls to 27th place. She ran 22:36; Emily Scranton, 23:43; Fiona Puglese, 24:23; Kathryn Milwicz, 24:25; and Claire Palmer, 25:24.

Edgewood boys, Fallston girls win

Lenier Tucker led a one-two-three sweep, propelling Edgewood to a win over Fallston, Harford Tech and Joppatowne at Edgewood Wednesday. Tucker ran 16:41; Michael Dzambasow, 16:48; and Sam Verk, 17:07.

Fallston took the next four places with Sam Burgess at 17:16; Noah Kudla, 17:56; Nikos Katsapos, 18:09; and Hunter Ryan, 18:19.

The Rams put three more in the top 10 to win, 23-33: Alston Johnson, 18:39; Langston Gash, 18:41; and David Dzambasow, 18:45.

Harford Tech, led by Tyler Moran, 19:03, was third, and Joppatowne, led by Darien Scott, 19:19, was fourth.

In the girls' race, Brooke Hutton ran 21:51 to lead a seven-place Fallston sweep. Behind her were Emily Scranton, 21:59; Grace Lekites, 22:14; Fiona Puglese, 22:31; Kathryn Milwicz, 23:09; Samantha Lewis, 23:24; and Emma Freeman, 23:32.

Tech's Madeline Miller was eighth in 24:44 and Phoebe Steiger, 10th in 27:41. Edgewood's Kaley Barnhill placed ninth in 25:49.

Patterson Mill boys, girls win

Steph McCartney won the girls' race, and Sam Caretti, the boys Wednesday as Patterson Mill won a triangular meet on its home course.

McCartney won by more than a minute in 21:34 in leading the girls to a 29-30 win over Bel Air. The Huskies put four in the top 10, with Samantha Herman third in 23:18; Kayla Ricks, sixth in 24:24; and Nikki Iacaruso, seventh in 25:00.

Grayson Slencak led Bel Air with a runner-up finish in 22:46. Megan Caudill was fourth in 24:00; Marissa Abbey, fifth, 24:01; Devon Davenport, ninth, 26:02; and Emily League, 10th, 26:03. Madison Bauld, eighth in 25:19, led Havre de Grace to third place.

Caretti, who ran 18:02, led his team to a 25-32 win over Bel Air. The Huskies put six in the top 10, with Lawrence Swartz fourth in 19:22; Aaron Smith, fifth, 19:25; Ken Ikemoto, sixth, 19:27; Jake Nikila, ninth, 19:52; and Jason Noss, 10th, 20:08.

Bel Air's Jordan Mensh finished second in 18:49; Casey Sims, third, 18:59; Eric Ingram, seventh, 19:31; and John Cross, eighth, 19:48.
