Every November, the first few weeks can be full of postseason action at the high school level, and it's not limited to just one sport. This November is no exception.
Beginning Friday, there's plenty on the schedule to keep any spectator busy, whether its football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball or cross country.
Looking for another Friday night football game? We have one. John Carroll is hosting St. Mary's in a MIAA B Conference semifinal game. The Patriots beat St. Mary's, 31-21, the first week of October. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m.
Want more football? Well, we have that too, but you'll have to travel a bit. North Harford, the county's only public school playoff team this year, pays a visit to Milford Mill for a Class 3A North region semifinal. The Hawks are making a playoff appearance for the seventh time in the last eight years. Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m.
If it's state titles you're seeking, then there are two places you need to be, but with them happening at the same, it might be difficult. On the Eastern Shore, Fallston will vie for the school's 14th state field hockey championship when the Cougars meet the Crisfield Crabbers for the Class 1A state title. The game is set for 11 a.m. at Washington College.
Cross country, meanwhile, will be contesting state title races at Hereford High School in northern Baltimore County. There are eight races, but for us here in Harford County, we're not all that concerned with the 4A events as there are no 4A schools in the county.
Class 3A girls will run at 10:30 a.m. Class 3A boys will run at 11:30 a.m. The Class 1A girls race starts the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m., with the Class 2A girls next at 2 p.m., Class 1A boys will follow at 2:30 p.m. and the races end with the Class 2A boys at 3 p.m.
Taking a step back into state semifinal action, there's plenty to see, starting right here in Bel Air tonight. Fallston will meet Calvert in a 2A girls soccer state semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars were 2A state champions in 2009, the last time they were in the state tournament.
On Saturday, three more county teams will vie in soccer state semifinals, but none played locally.
Havre de Grace boys will get things started in 1A, taking on Brunswick at noon at North County High School. The Warriors are making their second straight appearance at the state semifinal level. Early in the evening, the focus will turn back to girls, as C. Milton Wright will take to the field at CCBC-Essex. The Mustangs, making a third straight trip to the semis, will battle Urbana in a 5 p.m. 3A clash. The Mustangs have lost in the semifinal round each of the past two years. CMW reached the final in 2007 and won the 4A title in 2005.
As part of a Harford County double header in Essex, North Harford boys will follow the CMW girls in 3A play, also meeting Urbana at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks are making their fourth appearance in state semifinal play, and first since 1994. The Hawks have never reached the final.
Now, if you don't want to sit outside for any of the aforementioned events, there a region championship match happening right in Bel Air. The Bobcats of Bel Air are hosting the Towson Generals for the 3A North region title and a berth into next week's state semifinals. Match time is 6 p.m. Bel Air has made three trips to the state semifinals, but none since 1999.
