Two schools separated by just a few miles were separated by a single goal Wednesday night as Patterson Mill and Bel Air met in UCBAC Chesapeake Division action.
The host Huskies held off a late charge by the Bobcats to win, 7-6, in the division opener for both.
Bel Air went on top less than two minutes into the game on Joey Creaghan's unassisted goal.
Less than a minute later, Chase Wedekind scored for the Huskies to tie the game.
A Parker Jones goal pushed the Bobcats (0-1/1-3) back ahead and Creaghan's second goal of the quarter made it, 3-1. Carson Kalama assisted on the goal.
Patterson Mill, however, stormed back in the final minute on two Josh Wilson goals. The goals came 34 seconds apart.
The Huskies (1-0/6-1) then scored three straight goals to begin the second quarter. Brandon Burris scored the first unassisted, while Mike McIntyre scored with an assist from Wilson with 5:34 to play in the half.
Wilson then added his third goal of the half, assisted by Deonte Alston, for a 6-3 lead.
Bel Air managed to sneak one more past Huskies keeper Jay Kuhn with 1:22 left in the half. Kalama did the honors unassisted.
Neither team found the nets in a scoreless third quarter and Patterson Mill's final goal came from Wilson with 10:48 to play.
Huskies goalie Kuhn came up big throughout the final quarter, turning back numerous Bel Air shots. Kuhn finished with 17 saves.
In the final few minutes though, Bel Air's Tom Hollenback gave the Bobcat faithful some hope.
Hollenback scored with 2:27 left and then grabbed the face off and scored again 17 seconds later to make it, 7-6.
The Huskies defense weathered two man-down situations late to seal the win.
Bel Air goalie Gavin Hanley finished with six saves.
Cougars beat Mustangs
Fallston got its first Chesapeake win Wednesday night, beating visiting C. Milton Wright, 13-7. The Cougars led at the half, 6-1.
Kyle D'Onofrio scored four times to pace the Cougars (1-0/2-5), who also got three goals from Jason Lawrence.
Zach Wheeler scored two goals and Marc Badger, Taylor Brown, Greg Horsham and Brenden Nolan each had single goals.
Zack Esser and D'Onofrio had two assists each and Badger and Wheeler had one assist apiece.
