In lieu of barbecuing or a trip to the beach this Fourth of July, a team of Harford County girls traveled to Vail, Colorado, to compete in the annual Vail Shootout Lacrosse Tournament from June 30 to July 3. The team, sponsored by the Baltimore-based Cole Roofing Company, finished third in a competitive field of 17 teams comprised of top-level collegiate and post-collegiate players from across the nation.

The team captain and trip organizer was Chelsea Ford, a John Carroll alumna and Towson University graduate. She has served as an assistant coach for the John Carroll girls' varsity lacrosse program for the past five years. Ford secured a generous sponsorship from Cole Roofing, a fourth-generation family business based in Baltimore, to assist with travel expenses for the team.

Team Cole Roofing boasted a majority of former Harford County players. Most of the team played together with the NEMS Lacrosse Club in high school, and many played together since elementary school. In addition to Ford, teammates Mary Zulty, Delia Pais, Kelsey Aburn, Courtney Aburn, Cailey Aburn, Whitney Donald, and Casey Ancarrow are all alumnae of John Carroll. Zulty had a standout four-year career at the College of William & Mary. Zulty was a captain senior year, and finished out her career with second team all-CAA honors and ranking 15th in program's history in overall points. Pais anchored the defense at Harvard University for four years, serving as captain her senior year and leading the Harvard program back into prominence. Courtney Aburn played four stellar years at the University of Delaware. Aburn was named to all-CAA Rookie team in 2007, elected captain her senior year, and finished 21st as Delaware's all-time career points leaders. Kelsey Aburn is a graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland after four great years on the lacrosse team. Her younger sister, Cailey Aburn, also plays at St. Mary's and will graduate in the spring. Whitney Donald was a member of the Washington College Shorewomen. Casey Ancarrow is in her third dominant season at James Madison University. Among many awards, Ancarrow was named to first team all-CAA this year, second team all-CAA in 2010 and CAA Rookie of the Year in 2010. Ancarrow is also a member of the U.S. National Lacrosse Team.

In addition to the John Carroll contingent, Team Cole Roofing also included notable North Harford High alumnae Kelsey Branch and Chrissy Jones. Branch had a fantastic career at St. Mary's College of Maryland, graduating as St. Mary's all-time assist leader with 130 career assists. Jones is entering her senior year as a defensive standout at Hofstra University.

The team was grateful to have four more competitive players from outside of Harford County join them in the Vail Shootout. Elizabeth Northfield and Colleen Simpson both played for St. Mary's College of Maryland. Goalie Morgan Kelly enjoyed a standout career at James Madison, where she was named to first team all-CAA in 2010, and is now an assistant coach at George Mason University. Catie O'Mahoney played at theUniversity of California Berkeley.

Team Cole Roofing faced stiff competition in Vail, finishing the tournament with a commendable 5-1 record. Of 17 teams, Team Cole Roofing placed third, beating last year's tournament champions CRSLax.com for third place. Courtney Aburn and Casey Ancarrow were named to the All-Tournament team. The team thoroughly enjoyed reuniting and playing together again for the first time since 2006. The group is anxious and ready to take the first place title in the 2012 Vail Shootout.

The team is currently working to find sponsors for the 2012 tournament to cover registration and travel expenses. The team is grateful for any donations or support from the local community, and looks forward to representing Harford County again in Vail.
