Quality. Consistency. And an excellent staff. These are the three ingredients Josef Gohring, owner of Josef’s Country Inn in Fallston, believes are necessary to create a successful restaurant and he should know—his establishment was recently voted “Best Classic Restaurant” in Harford County.
Born in Germany, Josef has been in the restaurant business since he was 15 years old. “People always come back to basics,” he says. “You have to have a great staff, quality in food and consistency. That’s my opinion.” He describes his restaurant as a place where “everyone—young and old—can find something to eat.”
For nearly 30 years, Josef’s Country Inn has been serving up authentic and traditional German dishes, such as Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional veal presentation served with house potatoes and vegetable du jour; German Sausage Trio with bratwurst, weisswurst and bauerwurst sausages served with sauerkraut and German potato salad; and Calves Liver Lyonnaise, sautéed calves liver served with bacon and fried onions.
“Everybody has their niche—McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut,” Josef says. “We’re not into that. We’re not into mass production.” Other menu items include filet mignon, hamburgers and seafood dishes, such as crab cakes, lobster, snails in garlic butter, steamed mussels and Chilean sea bass.
Richard Arnold, a regular costumer from Jarrettsville, has been coming to Josef’s for about 12 years and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon. “The food is good and they have a good clientele,” Richard says. “It’s a congenial crowd. It’s a good spot, a family restaurant.”
