Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name. And if that’s true, then stop in for a coffee or sandwich at Vancherie’s Union Avenue Café in downtown Havre de Grace. “If Cheers was a breakfast and lunch place, it would be Vancherie’s,” says owner Becky Fitzgerald.
Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on weekends, Vancherie’s serves breakfast all day. “Our omelettes are really, really good,” says Becky. “Everyone has a favorite, especially the crab omelette, which is made with lump crabmeat, tomato and cheddar.”
Other popular dishes include the crab melt—crab and melted Swiss cheese on a grilled English muffin—and the BLT. Vancherie’s serves up large portions made to order with fresh ingredients, many of which come from local farms or the café’s backyard vegetable garden.
“It doesn’t get any fresher than that,” Becky says. “The garden is really a community effort, and it doesn’t just support the restaurant. We grow enough for everybody and produce enough jalapeño peppers to light up this whole city.”
Becky, along with her husband, Carol, took over the café last September; however, Vancherie’s has been around since the early 1940s. Originally, the first restaurant on the property was Harford House Lunchroom, which was associated with the nearby Harford House Hotel. In 1943, Jim Vancherie and his wife, Gussie, opened Vancherie’s Café and Snack Bar.
“This place has a unique history, but it’s a community place,” Becky says of Vancherie’s. “It’s very friendly and the staff knows everybody. They know how our customers take their coffee. It’s just that kind of place.”
