On behalf of the staff and clients at Anna's House, I want to express my gratitude for the wonderful private/public partnership and collaboration between Harford Transit, Harford County Parks and Recreation and Catholic Charities of Baltimore. So often we focus on all of the negative circumstances around us, and during this holiday season, I wanted to share some positive news.
Anna's House is a program of Catholic Charities of Baltimore with the following mission: inspired by the Gospel mandates to love, serve and teach, Catholic Charities provides care and services to improve the lives of Marylanders in need. Anna's House role in that mission is to help homeless women and children in Harford County to achieve self-sufficiency. One of the major challenges our clients face is access to reliable transportation that will allow them to get to medical appointments, job interviews, employment and other necessary destinations. Up until recently, our clients had to walk over a mile to get to the bus stop by the Harford Mall to utilize public transportation.
I contacted Beth Hendrix, Director of Harford County Community Services, who promptly linked me with Jim Ports, the Administrator of Harford Transit LINK to develop a creative strategy that would allow Harford Transit to extend their services to Anna's House. Given the fact that it was not possible to have the Harford Link bus come directly to Anna's House due to poor visibility for turning around, he was quick to help us by brainstorming for a more viable option. He suggested that we contact Arden McClune, Director of Harford County Parks and Recreation to determine if we could use their parking lot and turn around driveway since they are located in close proximity to Anna's House. Jim Ports and Arden McClune both came to meet with us at Anna's House and were quite open to helping us with our current plight. Within a week we had worked out all of the details and Harford Link services are now available for our clients!
This is a shining example of how our County Government works on the behalf of some of our most vulnerable citizens!
