Because flooding is expected in Port Deposit in the coming days, the George Jones concert scheduled for Saturday in Marina Park has been postponed.

The Cecil County Food and Wine Festival, featuring a George Jones concert, have been postponed to Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. because of the amount of rainfall expected in the coming days, which will require the Conowingo Dam to open flood gates, according to a press release. With the flood gates opened, Marina Park is expected to be flooded.

Port Deposit Mayor Wayne Tome Sr. said the decision was made after he talked to workers with the Conowingo Dam. By noon Thursday, he said, they expected to have to open 18 flood gates and by noon on Friday, it should be up to 30.

As of Wednesday afternoon, according to Administrative Assistant Kathy Gray, the Conowingo Dam had only opened 10 to 12 gates and there was no flooding in Port Deposit.

The water will reach its highest level and crest Saturday morning, Tome added.

"That will put us in flood conditions in the park and that's why we postponed the festival," Tome said.

To postpone, Tome said, the commissioners had to give notice by Thursday and during Tuesday night's meeting, decided to postpone it and pick a new date, rather than wait until the October meeting for a new date.

After the flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, Tome said, the commissioners wanted to get ahead of this incoming storm and take precautions.

"That's what our goal was, to err on the side of safety," he said.

All of the originally scheduled events, including performances by Dean Crawford and the Dunn's River Band, as well as food and craft vendors, are remaining the same.

Previous ticket purchases, too, will be honored for Oct. 15 and tickets can be purchased for the new event at http://www.missiontix.com.
