Tommy Gray Kyger Jr., an employee of Bane's Tree and Lawn Service, was trimming trees in front of 901 Holland Road, north of Bel Air, when he fell approximately 45 feet to the ground, suffering critical injuries, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near the corner of Holland and Irwin roads, a short distance from Route 1. Sheriff's deputies and the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene.
A Bel Air ambulance took Mr. Kyger to the Tucker Field athletic complex at the intersection of Routes 1 and 23, where the Maryland State Police Medevac Trooper I landed to pick him up. Meanwhile, deputies interviewed occupants of the house and members of the tree crew at the house where the accident occurred.
The helicopter had to sit on a football field while emergency medical personnel worked to stabilize Mr. Kyger inside the ambulance. They also had to stop and perform CPR on him on the ground shortly after they started to carry him from the ambulance on a stretcher to the waiting helicopter.
The Medevac finally was able to take off before 12:30 p.m. for the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where, according to he sheriff's office, Mr. Kyger succumbed to his injuries shortly before 1 p.m.
According to his obituary from R.T. Foard Funeral Home in Elkton, Mr. Kyger was born in Baltimore on June 21, 1980, and was the son of Florence Kyger and the late Tommy G. Kyger Sr. He was employed at Kerns Brothers Tree Service and had a genuine passion for his job and also enjoyed working on cars as well as spending time with this son.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Ethan Kyger, of Rising Sun; his sister, Christine Kyger of Elkton; and his nephew, Chase.
Friends and family may call at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 S. Queen St. in Elkton, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 14. A service honoring his life will be at 7 p.m. Burial will be in West Nottingham Cemetery.
