An Edgewood man is accused of attacking a couple walking with their child by trying to rob them and hit them with a tire iron, according to charging documents.
Austin Jones, 20, of the 1300 block of Clover Valley Way, was ordered held on $75,000 bail by District Court Judge Susan Hazlett on Monday on charges of armed robbery and first-degree and second-degree assault.
The victims, a man and woman, told police they were walking with their baby in the intersection of McCann and Starr streets at about 10:06 a.m. Sunday when a man drove past them, stopped the vehicle and backed up before getting out the vehicle, according to the statement of charges.
The suspect was holding a tire iron and demanded money from the male victim. The suspect then swung the tire iron at the woman, whose husband put his arm up to block the swing, according to the statement of charges.
The woman meanwhile shut the door to the suspect's car, locking him out. The suspect then ran into the woods before deputies arrived on the scene.
A witness nearby said she heard a man yell, "Give me all your [expletive] money; you don't know who [expletive] you're messing with."
The witness said the man swung something and she started yelling, "The police are coming," at which point the suspect ran into the woods.
Jones was located in the woods and placed under arrest.
He told police the male victim "flicked him off" while Jones was driving, so he "got out of the vehicle with a tire iron because he was in a bad mood," according to the charging documents.
Jones noted he did not get any money from the victim, so he did not complete the robbery, the charging documents state.
A deputy found a tire iron at the scene, as well as tire marks at the site of the incident that were consistent with a vehicle backing up suddenly.
Jones has six prior convictions, including charges of violating a protective order and having marijuana, an assistant state's attorney said during the bail review hearing.
