An arrest warrant was issued late Tuesday evening for a 19-year-old Joppa woman who allegedly tried to kill her 9-month-old daughter by injecting her repeatedly with insulin.
Harford County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 900 block of Scannell Court in Joppa for a report of a child in cardiac arrest at about 1:33 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release.
As deputies arrived, they were met by paramedics from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company who were administering emergency medical care to the child.
The child, 9-month-old Selena Olivia Weber, who lives with her family on Scannell Court, was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased at 2:18 p.m Tuesday.
EMS personnel were also requested to treat and transport the 19-year-old mother of the child, Qucelia Yvette Baldeo, 19, who police said attempted to commit suicide by slashing her wrists.
Baldeo was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, where she remained in critical condition Wednesday morning, according to Eddie Hopkins, spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office..
Detectives from the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division were called to the scene and to the hospital. They were interviewing family members to determine what occurred.
Deputies are investigating the possibility that Baldeo repeatedly injected her daughter with insulin, Hopkins said Tuesday night, but detectives are awaiting toxicology results and confirmation on a cause of death from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Hopkins said he could not elaborate further.
In the warrant, Baldeo is charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse, according to a media release issued by the sheriff's office around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The warrant will be served upon Baldeo's release from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
