At least one person was trapped after a single vehicle accident in Churchville Tuesday morning that knocked out power to the area near the accident.
At 8:44 a.m., Harford County Emergency Operations broadcast an accident with rescue on Route 136 and Kragl Drive in Churchville.
Maryland State Police received the call about the crash at 8:38 a.m. for a single vehicle into a pole, Sgt. Yingling at the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack said.
The accident occurred just south of the Routes 22, 136 and 155 intersection in Churchville during a driving rainstorm.
Yingling said the passenger was trapped in the car for about an hour, "I believe because of the downed power lines," he said, adding it was a hectic scene.
The driver and passenger were both taken by ambulance from Level Volunteer Fire Company to Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, he said.
The vehicle involved was a white full-sized van, according to photographs from the scene.
There were soon numerous reports of power outages, including the lights at the nearby intersection, which caused traffic backups along Route 22, one of Harford County's most heavily traveled highways.
A monitored emergency radio broadcast said the person trapped in the vehicle was extricated at 9:40 a.m.
At 9:50 a.m. Baltimore Gas & Electric Company's online outage map reported two outages in the vicinity of the crash affecting 708 customers.
Brendan Opdyke and his mother Lea Opdyke, who live on Calvary Road (Route 136) near where the crash occurred said they heard what sounded like thunder and then their home lost power.
Brendan, who is home schooled, said they next hear an ambulance, followed by state troopers, BGE trucks and fire engines. Lea Opdyke said when she called BGE about the outage, they told her they were aware of it.
A photo taken by Brendan shows a utility pole broken near the top, with the crossbeams hanging. The van ended up at the entrance to a side street across Route 136 where the pole was broken.
