A 20-year-old Harford County man died from injuries after fire engulfed a home in Baldwin Thursday evening, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
Conner Daniel McKeown was found unconscious at about 7:47 p.m. at a house in the 2700 block of Greene Lane near Upper Cross Roads and transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air where he was pronounced dead, according to the fire marshal's office.
About 50 firefighters from Harford and Baltimore counties worked for almost two hours to control the fire, which was found to have originated in the first-floor living room, according to a news release from the fire marshal's office.
Damage to the two-story home, which the fire marshal's news release said was "vacant," is estimated at $100,000. The house sits on an agricultural property that has a "for sale" sign on it.
According to Maryland property tax records, the owner of the 56-acre property has a Towson address, and the home is not the owner's principal residence.
According to fire officials, Conner McKeown's father, Kevin McKeown, arrived at the home to find smoke and flames visible from the structure and called 911 before entering and trying to find his son.
The senior McKeown was helped outside by firefighters and was treated and released at the scene with minor burn injuries.
Maryland online court records list Conner McKeown's address in the 2700 block of Pemberton Ridge Road in Baldwin, which is near the home where the fire occurred.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation; however, according to the fire marshal's office, investigators have determined the home did not have working smoke alarms.
The cause of death of the victim will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to the fire marshal's office.
Investigators from the Harford County Sheriff's Office are assisting the fire marshal's office.
Conner McKeown, a 2010 graduate of Loyola Blakefield in Towson, had been attending Elon University in North Carolina, according to family members.
