An Aberdeen man died in an accident early Thursday morning involving a tractor trailer and car in Aberdeen.
At approximately 5:09 a.m., at the intersection of Route 22 and Beards Hill Road, a tractor trailer driven by Nelson Chambers, 38, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., collided with a 2006 Chevrolet sedan, driven by Robert Simmons, 47, of Aberdeen, according to a news release from the Aberdeen Police Department.
Mr. Simmons had to be extricated from his vehicle by the Aberdeen Fire Department and was transported to Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, where he was pronounced dead. Chambers, driving the tractor trailer, was not injured in the accident, police said.
Aberdeen police, along with the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Crash Team and Commercial Vehicle Inspection Team, are investigating the cause of the crash, according to the release.
Route 22 was blocked by police between Beards Hill Road and Middleton Lane, and traffic was detoured through a nearby shopping center parking lot, causing backups on Route 22 for several hours.
Mr. Simmons' death was the first fatality of 2012 on Harford County highways.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
