With temperatures in the low 30s and nary a breeze to disturb the stillness of the evening, hundreds descended on the area around the Havre de Grace Middle School and countless others watched from vantage points elsewhere in the city in anticipation of the Duck Drop. Sponsored by the Susquehanna Hose Co., whose members in recent years have added the city's holiday defining reverie to its boundless community service, the duck was hoisted atop one of the company's trucks with its apparatus fully extended high above the school grounds. The duck was to be lighted all in pink as part of the fire company's effort to support the Susan G. Komen organization's fight against breast cancer.
As the bewitching hour of the new year approached, DJ Jeff Thompson led the crowd in the countdown, the duck descended, 2013 was illuminated and fireworks filled the sky.
After nearly 20 minutes of fireworks, the crowd cheered, motorists flashed their vehicle's lights and blasted its horn. Then, everyone cheerfully turned, went to their vehicles or started their walk home satisfied they had welcomed another new year in style.
