A nearly 3-year-old child is expected to be released from the hospital in the next couple days after nearly drowning in a bathtub in her Edgewood home Monday night.

The girl, 2 years and 11 months old, was in the bathtub in a home in the 1300 block of Goldmeadow Way in Edgewood around 5:45 p.m., according to Monica Worrell, a spokesperson for the Harford County Sheriff's Office. She was under the supervision of her male guardian, who is her mother's boyfriend.

"This is an active, ongoing investigation," Worrell said Monday night. "It does not appear to be purposeful in nature at this time."

The boyfriend was baby sitting the young girl and said she had a fever, so he put her in a cold bath in an attempt to reduce her fever, according to a sheriff's office incident report. As he was watching her in the bathtub, he heard another child in the house coughing and went to check on the other child.

When he returned in less than a minute, according to the report, the girl was lying face up, floating with her lips above water. The boyfriend said he grabbed her and started to do CPR and after a minute the girl began breathing. He said he picked her up, carried the girl to a neighbor's house, where they called 911.

A neighbor said the child was blue and also attempted CPR.

The child was flown by Medevac helicopter with life-threatening injuries, Rich Gardiner, a spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association, said. Worrell said she was taken to John Hopkins Children's Center and was in intensive care.

The sheriff's office says its investigation is closed.
