The Marine Corps League, Harford County Detachment 1198 held its annual installation of officers and Marine of the Year presentation April 23 at the Jarrettsville VFW post.
The Marine of the Year award was presented to Evelyn Remines. This is the most prestigious award any Detachment Marine can receive. Through her dedication to numerous programs and activities, Remines best exemplifies what it takes to be the best of the best.
The 2013-2014 officers are Commandant Pete Arnold, Senior Vice Commandant Gene Wlock, Junior Vice Commandant Evelyn Remines, Judge Advocate Jeff Beavers and Junior Past Commandant Don Benson.
The mission of the Marine Corps League is to join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the U.S. Marine Corps, banding together those who are serving in the Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from the service that they may effectively promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all marines and former marines and to their widows and orphans; and to perpetuate the history of the Marine Corps and by fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to marines.
The Harford County Detachment 1198 is involved with numerous community activities throughout the year. They support Bel Air First Fridays, BBQ Bash, Memorial Day, 4th of July Parade, Havre de Grace Seafood Festival just to name a few. They are proud to sponsor the Toys For Tots program in Harford County, where all toys and monetary donations stay. Members sponsor a bowling program at Perry Point VA Medical Center and the Fallen Marine Program, attending the wake/funeral of deceased marines in Harford County – "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."
