Edgewood man rescued four hours after crashing into Joppa ravine

An injured 21-year-old Edgewood man who crashed his car over an embankment Wednesday morning wasn't discovered for four hours.

Around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Michael Courtney, of the 500 block of Goldeneye Court in Edgewood, lost control of his car and went down a 40-foot embankment on Winters Run Road just south of Singer Road in Joppa, Harford County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eddie Hopkins said.

Courtney, whose car landed upside down in a stream, wasn't discovered down in the ravine until about 11:30, police said, when a couple driving past noticed the car, he said Thursday.

He was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious injuries.

Units from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company reported getting to the call at about 11:28 a.m., after it was dispatched at 11:23 a.m.

Hopkins said the vehicle left the road and struck the guardrail for an unknown reason, and the crash could have happened any time overnight or Wednesday morning.

According to Joppa-Magnolia fire company, rescue crews extricated the driver and he was brought back up to the road in a basket stretcher.

"The patient was packaged in a stokes basket attached to ropes," the fire company reported. "The hook and ladder truck from the JMVFC was then used to hoist the patient from the ravine and onto the road. Twelve minutes after JMVFC units arrived on scene, the victim was safely on the road."

A Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter flew him to the shock trauma.

He was reported in good condition at shock trauma Thursday afternoon, Hopkins said.

More than 20 Joppa Magnolia volunteers responded to the scene. The Harford County Volunteer Technical Rescue Team was originally called, but it was canceled before it arrived.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office was continuing to investigate the cause of the collision Thursday and could not say if alcohol may have been involved.
