Fire Prevention Week started Sunday with open houses and firefighting demonstrations in Abingdon, Level and Norrisville and runs through Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Bel Air Fire Department and the Susquehanna Hose Co. in Havre de Grace have scheduled open houses for Saturday.
"Prevent Kitchen Fires—that's the message of this year's Fire Prevention Week," according the National Fire Prevention Association's web site. "From October 6-12, we'll be spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home—and we'll help teach people how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place."
Fire Prevention Week has always been a popular observance in Harford, bringing kids and their families to open houses across the county.
