As long as the weather holds, 10 hot-air balloons will be launched into the air Saturday from the Harford County Equestrian Center.
They'll go up as part of SARC's Family Fun Day, one of two events this weekend to help raise money for SARC's programs, which include a 24-hour helpline, a safehouse, counseling, crisis intervention, a teen corner, hospital companions and legal advocacy and representation. For more information about SARC (Safety, Awareness, Resources, Change), visit http://www.sarc-maryland.org.
The 2nd Annual Rising Above It Balloon Festival, with family-friendly activity sponsored by the county nonprofit that provides resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking, also includes the Balloon Glow Gala.
The gala will be tonight, 7 to 11 p.m. at Maryland Golf and Country Clubs, 1335 E. MacPhail Road in Bel Air. It will feature a meet-and-greet with balloon pilots, illuminated balloons, a reception and live auction, music and dancing. The hot air balloons also will be illuminated, but won't be launched from the country club.
Tickets to the gala are $125.
The daylong Family Fun Day will be Saturday, noon to 7 p.m., at the Harford County Equestrian Center, 608 N. Tollgate Road in Bel Air. Tickets are $5.
Balloon baskets and balloon pilots will be on-site all day to talk to attendees. If weather conditions are favorable, balloons will be inflated at approximately 4 p.m. (could be earlier or later, depending on the wind). They will be launched as pat of the hare and hound race, which will begin between 6 and 7 p.m., also weather permitting.
The day also features horse rides, Home Depot's interactive family workshop, moon bounces, face painting, balloon twisting, a scavenger hunt, a pirate encampment, the "big picture" project quilt plus the Maryland Zoo's ZOOmobile and Harford County Public Library's Rolling Reader.
The main stage lineup includes Collect All 5, Kinetic Youth Academy's tumbling show, dog Frisbee show, Mr. Twister "magic show" and Move It Move It Move It with Uncle Pete. Food and craft vendors round out the day.
