Havre de Grace Mayor Wayne Dougherty led the way. He raised the most money. And he was the best dressed.

So at the appointed hour – 10 a.m. Saturday – the mayor and dozens of others, including Scotty Hurst, Chief of the Susquehanna Hose Co., ran, walked, waddled and squealed into the Chesapeake Bay for the second annual Havre de Grace Duck Dunk. It's a fundraiser for the Havre de Grace volunteer fire company similar to the Polar Bear Plunge, Maryland's huge winter fundraiser to benefit the Special Olympics.

Those at the scene said the water temperature was supposed to be about 40 degrees. That's about the same as what the air temperature was supposed to be, but the brisk wind blowing across the Havre de Grace Yacht Basin made onlookers believe the water might feel warmer.

Not all those who participated would agree with those who were just watching.

"It's that second time that really just takes it out of you," a drenched Mayor Dougherty said as he headed for dry clothes and a warmer spot.

His tuxedo, complete with red bow tie and white sneakers, might not have been warm enough when it was dry, and it surely wasn't as the cold air hit him.

Dougherty raised the most money for the event, more than $2,000.
